🌈 Highlights of the Attraction Huangguoshu Scenic Area is home to three main waterfalls: Dupotang Waterfall, Huangguoshu Waterfall, and Tianxingqiao (Heavenly Star Bridge). While the waterfalls are naturally positioned in a sequence from near to far, it's actually best to explore them in reverse order for a more immersive experience. Here’s a rough guide on time allocation: Dupotang Waterfall: About 40 minutes Huangguoshu Waterfall: Around 1.5 hours Tianxingqiao: 2 to 3 hours, depending on how much you explore.
🚗 Getting There From Guiyang, you can reach Huangguoshu by bus, high-speed train, or driving. The area is well-developed, so any of these options is convenient. Just note that with the bus or train, your schedule will be more fixed. During peak seasons, trips can feel a bit rushed. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, consider renting a car for a self-guided experience.
👍 Must-See Spots Of course, Huangguoshu Waterfall itself is the main attraction. Afterward, head to the Milky Way Waterfall inside Tianxingqiao, and save Dupotang for last. Keep in mind that the flow of the waterfalls changes with the seasons. During the rainy season, Tianxingqiao is particularly stunning, despite requiring a longer hike. Personally, I found Dupotang the least essential if you’re pressed for time, but that’s just my view.
🚩 Tips for Avoiding Crowds We visited during China’s National Day holiday, and surprisingly, the wait times weren’t too bad. The park has plenty of shuttle buses, though walking paths within the scenic area can get crowded, especially since they’re quite narrow. You may need to shuffle along with the crowd, but overall, even on a busy holiday, we managed to move fairly efficiently.
💗 Extra Tips There’s no need to take the designated "God’s View" route. Once you’re inside Huangguoshu Waterfall, follow the main path, and on the return trip, take a right turn (you’ll see clear signs for this). This will lead you to a mountain path where you naturally get that panoramic “God’s View” of the waterfall—no special detour required. Just stick to the regular route, and you’ll see everything...
Read moreWe visit the Huangguoshu Waterfall in the Huangguoshu National Park in Zhenning County, Guizhou. It boasts the largest waterfall in Asia. A bus takes us to the area where the falls are. But we find out that we cannot purchased our entry tickets here. The driver tells us to get back on the bus and we purchase tickets for ¥200 each in the nearby village. The ticket price includes the bus ride to three attractions. Today, we visit two, the Huangguoshu falls (黄果树大瀑布)first, and the Doupotang falls next.
The whole visit to the bigger falls take over two hours, including the loop walk to the Water-Curtain Cave (水帘洞 in Chinese), a 134 m long cave located at the back of the Huangguoshu Falls. It allows visitors to not only view, but hear and touch the waterfalls. Huangguoshu, it is claimed, is the only waterfall in the world that can be viewed from above, below, front, back, left and right.
During the peak season, the waiting time to enter this cave can range from 15 minutes to much longer. Visitors can only walk in one direction. The whole loop starting from near the Rhino Pool can take an hour. A cheap poncho is provided, and you can bring an umbrella, to keep dry. Bring enough drinking water and snacks as there are no provisions. Toilets are strategically provided. Beware of the risks of falls as the cement path is...
Read moreHuangguoshu Falls is 74 meters high and 81 meters wide. The upstream Baishui River is flowing towards the bluff and falling into the Rhinoceros Pool at the foot. During the rainy season (May to October), the water rolls down to the Rhinoceros Pool like thousands of horses galloping and shakes the ground and the hill. The thunderous roars of the falls can be heard several kilometers away. The falls are at their most spectacular about four days after heavy rain in this season. The dry season starts from November till April. In the two months of March and April the flow of water can become a trickle.
Further adding to the allure of Huangguoshu Falls is the presence of other 18 cascades both above and below the main falls. Hangguoshu is also the only one provided with naturally perforated waterfall caves. There is a marvelous Water-Curtain Cave located in the back of the waterfall. It is 134 meters long down to the foot of the falls, allowing visitors to not only view, but also hear and touch the waterfall. Being in it, one can see the plunging water like numberless strings of pearls flying down over one's head and also the rainbows in the fine drizzle. It is really a...
