It took us to get Water town from Beijing for 1.5hrs. Opening hour of Samatai Greatwall was 4.30pm so we had to wait for open. You can buy Village entrance ticket and Greatwall cable car at the ticket office. The village is brand new or newly rebuilt, quite sometime using pieces from ancient buildings of the village, but essentially with brand new stones. If you travel by bus from Beijing it will take 1.5hr to 2hrs and you can leave your bags or luggages at the bus station for free until 10pm. In order to see nightview of Gubei Watertown and Samatai Greatwall, it would be better to sleep one night. The reason I give only four star is because you can not buy food with cash, you need to have a topup card or wechat pay and restaurant staffs...
Read moreto be fair, this is worth visiting only to get to the Simatai Great Wall which is behind this small town (and which is amazing!). This town is not really an authentic old town, more man-made in old Suzhou style for tourists and not a common style of Northern China where this town is. The Great Wall at this part is breathtaking with its ruggedness and isolation, definitely worth a visit. Take note that it's further from Beijing than the other Great Wall stretches more commonly frequented...
Read moreVery well manage little town that is trying to imitate the ancient chinese town. Can be a very relaxing diy tour once you get there especially for kids . Lots of handicrafts for them. Must visit the great wall next door (Si Ma Tai). Very authentic and magnificient. Not as big as Badaling , but still preserved in its original stage and been told this is the only great wall you can visit at night. So best time to view pre sunset to capture day till...
