Du Fu Thatched Cottage, known as 杜甫草堂 in Chinese, is a captivating historical site located in Chengdu, China. This cultural gem is dedicated to the renowned Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu. The cottage, nestled in a picturesque setting, provides a glimpse into ancient Chinese architecture and landscaping.

As you wander through the well-preserved grounds, you'll encounter traditional buildings, serene courtyards, and beautiful gardens. The thatched-roof structures exude a rustic charm, creating an immersive experience that transports visitors back in time.

Du Fu, one of China's most celebrated poets, lived in this cottage during the Tang Dynasty, and the site serves as a tribute to his literary contributions. Exploring his former residence offers a unique opportunity to connect with the poet's life and immerse oneself in the cultural richness of ancient China.

The tranquil ambiance of the cottage provides a stark contrast to the bustling modernity of Chengdu. Visitors can reflect on Du Fu's verses, composed during times of personal hardship and societal upheaval. The site's historical significance, coupled with its natural beauty, makes it a must-visit destination for those interested in Chinese literature, history, and the enduring legacy of influential poets like Du Fu. In essence, Du Fu Thatched Cottage offers a serene retreat and a profound cultural journey, inviting visitors to appreciate the intersection of poetry and history in a tranquil...

A must see if you're interested in Chinese culture and particularly its literature. Du Fu, a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty, is highly respected amongst most people in China and his works are still taught in schools. Every Chinese person learns poems by Du Fu, and the country's other favourite poet, Li Bai, from childhood. Indeed without understanding Du Fu and his influence, one arguably cannot really understand China.

This museum is home to a restored garden and house where he once lived and wrote many of his poems. While there are English translations for many artefacts there is, unfortunately, little in the way of translated examples of Du Fu's works.

The shop too is somewhat devoid of something which one might happily purchase as a foreign tourist. All the books are Chinese only, there are no English/Chinese versions or other dual language books that would certainly appeal to many foreigners. Even a bust of Du Fu himself would probably sell well but there were none to be found.

Overall, however, a lovely place to visit with its tranquil gardens and...

Came here ‘cause ChatGPT and 小红书 both said it’s a must-visit — so of course, I had to see what’s the hype about 😂

Entrance was RMB50, and I came around 2:30 PM. It’s a really peaceful place filled with greenery, old-school architecture, and photo corners everywhere. Nice if you’re into history, poetry, or just quiet walks.

There are also snack stalls and cafés inside — I got two sausages for RMB8, super affordable and surprisingly good 😋 You could easily spend an hour or two here just exploring and snacking.

That said, I visited in late September, so it was humid and wet, making the ground slippery and lighting pretty dark. Not sure how some people’s photos turned out so bright 😅 mine definitely didn’t look like that.

Overall, a calm and scenic spot worth visiting once when in Chengdu — especially if you’re more of a nature or...

A lovely green, quiet and peaceful space remembering DuFu and his friendship with LiBai. The exhibits are limited, with some sculptures and VR, giving a brief glimpse into DuFu's life. There is a good bonsai garden at the back. Good to just sit around and unwind in its many corners and courtyards. There are a few tea restaurants, with some selling coffee too. The americano i tried is just ok. There are limited options for food though. There must be at least 10 souvernir shops spreading out on the left side of south entry, the recommended entrance.
