Chimelong Safari Park near PanYu in Guangzhou is still the best all-around Chimelong destination for the whole family to enjoy. Although the Guangzhou Zoo has improved itself in recent years so both are recommended. The new overhead Tram makes the Safari park more accessible if your group does not have walking stamina for entire park.
Visitation tips:
Arrive 30 min before opening via South Gate, and queue up at the far left set of security gates. Most people are unaware of these.
Either head straight to Triplets Station to ride overhead Tram to North Entrace and get full Park overview OR walk to Panda exhibit to catch the morning active feeding time before they go to sleep. On past visits when looking at pandas later in the day, they were either sleeping or... doing inappropriate things to themselves that are hard to explain to children. Weird creatures, for sure.
Try to reach the North Exit area in good time, and check the line for Safari Park Train tour. If there is a line out to the Lake, it can easily be 2 hours despite saying 60 min. Forget it or splurge the 150 RMB for EasyPass to access shorter line. The Overhead Tram through the Safari park is quite good, although it does help to have been thru it on the ground to know where the animals are located.
The 12:45pm Elephant Show is worth making it to, but it has changed over past 10 years either for better or worse depending on opinion. They used to do fabulous circus-like elephant displays of climbing, balance, and ball playing of the sort that most westerners would nowadays consider cruel treatment for such majestic animals. Well, by 2024 they have changed the show to be more humane but still fun to see creative ways elephants will problem solve to reach and eat their favorite foods.
Check times for the White Tiger feeding displays. This is still of a style you would not see in a western zoo, where they dangle raw meat over the tiger's swimming pool and everyone relishes in the jumps and splashes...
I visited Chimelong Safari Park while visiting my girlfriend's family, and took my little cousin. Over all it was a great day. If a zoo and a theme park had a love child this would be it. There are two parts to the park the Safari (aka Safari on wheels) and the exhibits (aka Safari on foot). The Safari is a drive through attraction where you can drive though using your own car or catch one of the tour trains. While using your own car cost an additional admission if you can this is the better option as you can take your time and stop and look at the animals you like. This is what we ended up doing. The trains just drive past and don't give you much opportunity to watch the animals. The tame animal deer, peacocks, giraffe etc all roam free as you drive through. The others like bears, lions, tigers, hippos etc are in open enclosure which are very close. Over all the Safari on wheels was a great experience all of the photos below were taken as I was driving. The only criticism is that there were too many cars going though the Safari and there could be traffic at spots. Also be sure to go to the bathroom before you start the drive through as there is nowhere to stop. The Safari on foot was also a good experience there is a wide variety of animal exhibits and some good shows to watch. The shows are more showie than you would expect from a western zoo but are still good. Food options are a typical Chinese theme park affair and nothing to write home about. Over all it was a great full day experience. Combine with Chimelong Paradise (them park proper with rollercoasters and the likes) next door you could easily spend two days...
Read moreChimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou is a large, well-maintained wildlife sanctuary that offers an unforgettable experience for animal lovers. The park is home to thousands of animals from around the world, and what makes it special is its open-concept design—many animals are allowed to roam freely in large, natural-style enclosures, which is a refreshing change from traditional zoos.
The park is divided into several thematic zones such as the Tropical Rainforest, African Savannah, Asia, and Koala Garden, each carefully designed to mimic the natural habitat of its residents. We were especially impressed by the variety of animals including pandas, koalas, white tigers, giraffes, elephants, and many exotic birds.
To explore the park, there are a few options: • Cable Car Ride: This offers a relaxing aerial view of the entire safari and a chance to observe the animals from above. • Safari Train: For a closer encounter with free-roaming animals like zebras, rhinos, and antelopes, the train ride is a must. It brings you right into the heart of the safari zone.
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip—the park is family-friendly, clean, and well-organized. There are also plenty of rest areas, snack stalls, and educational displays along the way. It’s a great outing whether you’re with kids or just looking to appreciate wildlife in a more natural setting.
Highly recommended for a...
