We hiked Dragon's Back trail to get to the beach and arrived around 11:15 on a hot Monday morning (Memorial Day for us). There were only around ten other people there, but two lifeguards, several different small stands selling food, beer, sunscreen, drinks, etc. There were people renting umbrellas, chairs and surfboards. There was a drinking fountain, bathrooms/changing rooms and outdoor showers. The water was calm and warm and clean but I could not tell why this was called "Big Wave Bay" because the waves were non-existent, which I was OK with. We only stayed an hour and as we were there, the beach started to fill up. This was a beautiful beach, so nice that it had amenities and was the perfect middle stop to a four hour sweaty hike! Getting there was easy too, at least in the sense that the trail was well marked and well traveled. I know others there took a bus or taxi in to this little secluded beach but hiking's cheaper and more scenic 😀 I highly recommend this as a day trip if you're in Hong Kong!

We decided to walk from the end of the trail of dragon’s back to big wave bay. I wouldn’t recommend doing this since there isn’t a pedestrian path so you have to walk directly on the road which isn’t very safe (there are vehicles going by pretty frequently and the drive fast). I would recommend taking the number 9 bus instead which is quick and painless (we did this for the return journey and were glad we did). Big wave bay is beautiful even on a dreary january afternoon. There were a bunch of surfers riding the waves even though it was pretty cool outside. There are a few shops around the beach so we sat nearby with a beer enjoying the sea air. There is also a trail going up at the other side of the beach which you can hike if you’re looking for a beautiful view of the bay.

(first commented in 2019)A typical beach on HK island, with bus and minibus service and a metered parking lot. When you park your car, follow the crowd and take a 2 min walk before you can see the beach. There are a few canteens where you can buy light snack and drinks. (updated video clips in 2024 winter) Came here again in one winter morning, with temp around 18 deg C. Even though there's signs saying "no surfing", you could find the most seen action here is surfing! As the name of the beach implies, waves here are relatively big. Many youngsters were enjoying their winter sports there.
