The Wong Nai Chung Reservoir was the third man made lake constructed in Hong Kong back in 1899 and can be found just off the Wong Nai Chung Gap Road on Hong Kong Island. It is a small reservoir only holding around 27 million gallons, which led to the further damming of the nearby Tai Tam Valley to create a series of additional lakes in the decades that followed its construction.
There is a small park that opened to the public in 1986 immediately around the lake which includes a recreation centre where you can hire leisure boats to enjoy on the lake (closed presently due to the pandemic). There is a kiosk for refreshments and public toilets as well. Another point of interest are the four Declared Monuments that can be viewed at Wong Nai Chung Reservoir. These include the reservoir dam, weir, value house and workman's quarters building just west of the lake.
In the end, a visit to the Wong Nai Chung Reservoir and Park is best combined with a visit to the much larger and interesting series of reservoirs, trails and declared monuments that make up the Tai Tam Heritage Trail in the Tai Tam Country Park to the east of here. You can visit Wong Nai Chung first at the start of the hike and day in the country park before proceeding east on foot to Tai Tam.
Note: From the city, take bus 6 between Central and Stanley. Exit at Wong Nai Chung Gap Road which you will see on the announcement sign in the bus. The exit is at a Sinopec petrol station. Walk up a small staircase to the Tai Tam Reservoir Road and walk to your left 150 metres or so and you will arrive at the Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park. There are signs along the way and onward to the Tai Tam Reservoirs, Country Park and Heritage...
