Worth paying a visit if you find yourself in the old town part of Qingdao, even if only to look at it from the outside. Entry is ticketed (10rmb) and a reservation can be made via the Qingdao tourist attraction mini Wechat app. Do check on the opening hours as the church is an active one which is still in service.
It is a popular destination for couples taking themed wedding photos. The inside of the church is well maintained, though it is unclear whether the stained glass windows are originals. The church has been badly damaged during the Cultural Revolution and was later restored and reopened for religious worship in 1981. The church was built in the early 1930s by the German missionaries. Our local friend told us that it was rumoured that the original plan was for the church to be 100m tall but construction plans changed abruptly in 1934 after Hitler came to power and prohibited the transfer of money overseas.
