This hotel is right next to Shenzhen Station and Louhu Port (with Hong Kong on the other side). If you're not visiting Shenzhen for those reasons, this hotel is probably not for you. If I'd known that before booking, I wouldn't have booked, but this hotel was heavily discounted on WeChat, so I just booked it without really thinking. It seemed relatively central on the map and was very close to Subway Line 1, so actually it's not a very inconvenient location, by any means. However, this area of Shenzhen is unsightly and chaotic. Cars outside beep their horns day and night. Frankly, if I had to guess where it was, I would never guess I was in a Tier 1 city. For example, outside the hotel, there are street hawkers who pester you to buy necklaces, which is unheard of in Beijing and Shanghai. Old Street (Laojie) is about a mile away, but to walk there you will share the pavement with motorcycles, who for unknown reasons don't use the roads. Granted, motorcycles on pavements is not unusual in China, but in this part of Shenzhen, it's taken to the extreme. Laojie itself is not interesting at all, despite being one of Shenzhen's most famous places. It is dirty, not nice to look at, not particularly "old", and the street food is very unappetising and mostly just the same as Chinese street food anywhere else. The hotel itself: The lobby, cafe and bar are impressive to look at and very spacious. Hotel staff are friendly and efficient, but their English pronunciation is difficult to understand. My room had a "station wheel". I clarified in Chinese, and she meant "station view". But by Chinese standards, they're friendly staff. However, I wanted a cup of coffee after checkout, but the cafe was unstaffed (9:30 a.m.), so I didn't bother. My room was on the 16th floor and it was, at best, a 3-star room. The carpet needs replacing, as do the bathroom floor tiles, and it looks like it hasn't been renovated for at least 20 years. The cleaner cleaned my room in a timely fashion. I didn't try the hotel food, due to high prices and limited choice. A glass or two of red wine in the evening, in the ground floor bar, was nice, and with complimentary salted peanuts, but you will of course pay Western prices for alcoholic drinks. The hotel charged me 500RMB per night as an upfront deposit. No mention of this on the booking app. It was refunded upon check out with no issue, but it's the first time I've had to pay this kind of deposit at a hotel in China, and frankly I've stayed at nicer...
Read moreI last stayed at the Shangri-La Shenzhen in 2019 just before the pandemic. My wife and I enjoyed the stay much as it is the Shangri-La even though it was a bit dated. We chose to stay again this time. The grand old lady is truly showing her age. The hardware still show its glamours past, but it would be shadowed by all the new hotels mushrooming up around. The lobby is still nice and grand but it can do with some refreshing up. The room is still comfortable but aged: furniture looks old and out of spec, toilet is functional again can do with good update, the bed is still grand and nice, but the room is COLD with temperature always down at around 18 deg C even though we set it at 24.|The coffee house still look modern and nice. We could not access the top restaurant as it opens only for dinner - we tried lunch though...|We found the stay still comfortable as its location is excellent - just next to the Luohu Immigration Point next to Hong Kong. We actually took the HK MTR from Kowloon direct to the check-point, went through immigration and walked into Shangri-La. The border checkpoint is also the train station and the subway station so travel within Shenzhen and even out to other cities in China is straight forward. The only inconvenience is the absence of covered walkway from exit to the hotel.||One thing I must gave credit to - the counter staff, a Mr Xie, is really a great help. Efficient that make checking in a pleasant experience. He offered too many good advices on travelling around the city, and gave us an excellent alternative to travel to HK International Airport from the hotel. He made our stay a memorable one. Thumbs up to the...
Read moreThe Shangri-la Hotel in Shenzhen is a five-star hotel built in 1992. It's a large and beautiful hotel located a short distance from the Hong Kong border. The hotel's revolving restaurant, located on the top floor, immediately catches the attention of anyone who sees it for the first time. According to information obtained at the reception, it was renovated in 2014, but its decor, while luxurious, reveals a 1990s design style, with ornate details, dark woods, and textured wallpaper. It certainly had its glory days as one of the first luxury hotels in Shenzhen. The service is quite good; the staff is attentive, good-natured, and accustomed to dealing with the many foreigners who frequent the hotel. This cosmopolitanism is reflected in the breakfast, which is quite varied, with a Western menu (cereals, yoghurt, breads of various qualities, cold cuts, salads, etc.), Chinese, and Halal. The six elevators are fast reducing wait times to practically zero. We stayed in a room on the 19th floor, close to the elevators and with mountain views. The bed was comfortable, with soft pillows, quiet air conditioning and fast internet. The bathroom offered all the necessary amenities with good quality products. However, what spoiled our good impression was the noise produced by the elevators at night. There's no soundproofing. At times, it felt like we close to an airport... Despite this, one can sense the management's commitment to keeping the hotel in good condition. Despite its age, the furniture, bathroom fixtures, and lighting fixtures are well-maintained. It's a trip back to the 1990s! Note: Bathrobes and bedroom slippers are not allowed in the...
