I went on the Chicaque Nature Reserve (Cloud forest) day tour. It was a great day trip, highly recommended for anyone who loves birds! This reserve has native forest that has never been logged.
My guide Leon was extremely passionate and knowledgeable about birds (and Colombia in general), knowing all their calls, identifying them immediately by name (scientific name too), and also letting me know if they were endemic or not.
When he heard a bird, he played a recording of the call of that bird (he has a large collection of bird calls on his iphone) and lured most birds out into the open where we could spot them.
Leon has a digital SRL camera and was able to take some great photos of birds we saw (if they were still and close enough), then sent them to me later through WhatsApp. He also had a telephoto lens on a tripod, to which I connected my iphone and was able to get some great videos of hummingbirds feeding. AND he carried all this gear quite easily in a lovely walk down through the cloud forest. They drive you back up.
Breakfast and lunch provided were very good. All in all, we spotted 50 birds (Leon said it was a good day), which was a lot more than I expected! And the most I have ever seen in one day. So the price of the tour was well worth it.
Some of the highlights of the trip was seeing the Black Inca (Coaligena prunella), twice, and the Golden-bellied Starfrontlet (Coeligena bonapartei) only found in this small pocket of Colombia!
I found that Oswald and Daira were very helpful, easy to communicate with, responding to my emails and WhatsApp messages very quickly so I could decide what to do. I was also very happy to hear that they are very interested in the conservation of the beautiful fauna and flora of Colombia, so a company well...
Read moreI had a wonderful birding trip with my guide, Leon Sanchez, and excellent driver, Sebastian. My Andean Endemics trip was January 17th to 24th, 2023 and during that time we had great birding every day and I ended up with a trip list of 183 species (including 29 hummingbirds), which was a very nice total considering we were targeting a series of range-limited endemics. Leon was an excellent guide (great, in particular, at birding by ear) and we saw almost every target bird we sought including Noble Snipe, Bogota Rail, Green-bearded Helmetcrest, Colombian Chachalaca, Cundinamarca Antpitta, Whooping Motmot, and Barred Puffbird as well as a variety of antbirds, antshrikes, tanagers, woodcreepers and members of other typical Neotropical groups. Leon went to great pains to make sure the trip went really smoothly and he was a pleasure to bird and hang out with. There was a fair bit of time spent in heavy traffic, which was unavoidable since we were largely based out of Bogota, but Sebastian handled the driving wonderfully - nothing ever ruffled him. Of the places we visited, I especially enjoyed the time we spent at Finca Los Cactos, where our hosts Marta and Alain were utterly charming , and the time spent at Chingaza, which is fabulous paramo habitat. All in all it was a great trip -- the birding was stellar and the logistics were handled seamlessly...
Read moreI splurged on my final day of a month long solo birding trip to Colombia with a Bogota Birding excursion to Chingaza and the Observatorio de Colibries. The excursion did not disappoint!!! My guide, Camilo, was absolutely fantastic. I had many excellent and very enthusiastic bird guides during my month in Colombia, including Camilo, but Camilo added to this an element of friendly professionalism to his approach. His knowledge of bird calls was excellent so he easily picked up what was in the area, plus knew the locations of some harder to find species. And unlike many of my other excursions, I can honestly say that for all the species that he saw during our day birding, he was able to follow and point them out to me well enough that I could also have a good look and add it to my list as well (as opposed to birds'seen by guide, missed by me'!). In spite of some terrible weather in the afternoon (hail and heavy rain) we still netted an impressive number of birds and I added several more lifers to my list. I thank-you again for an excellent day of birding with BogotaBirding. It was a very nice way to end my...
