The Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Cartago, Costa Rica, is a truly remarkable and profoundly spiritual place. Known as Costa Rica's most revered religious shrine, the basilica's stunning architecture—a unique blend of colonial and Byzantine styles—immediately captures your attention. Inside, the atmosphere is incredibly solemn and reverent. The air is thick with a sense of peace and devotion, a feeling that is enhanced by the exquisite stained-glass windows and hand-painted interiors. But it is not just the beauty of the building that makes it special; it's the powerful story behind it. The basilica was built on the spot where, according to tradition, a small statue of the Virgin Mary, known as "La Negrita," was miraculously discovered and kept reappearing after being moved. This powerful legend makes the basilica a sacred site for countless people. Pilgrims from all over the country and beyond make the annual pilgrimage, or "romería," to the basilica, often walking the final stretch on their knees as a sign of penance and devotion. In the crypt below the main altar, you can see the very rock where the statue was found. A natural spring flows nearby, and many people believe the water has healing properties. Whether you are a believer or simply a visitor, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels offers a deeply moving experience that reflects the profound faith and rich cultural heritage of the Costa Rican people. It is a place of profound holiness, hope,...

There are hundreds of thousands of stories of faith within the walls of this beautiful Basilica and every August 2nd means a compulsory pilgrimage to fulfill a promise made to the " Negrita de los Angeles". I myself can assert that I have received a couple of miracles from the patrona de Costa Rica .🇨🇷 Things I thought I could not accomplish were certainly reached thanks to the faith I have on the Mother of the Lord.
This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful buildings I have visited in my life. People come from other countries to witness the faithful pay a promise or to pay a promise themselves. Located in the heart of the Cartago province, the Basilica de los Angeles is a place everyone visiting Costa Rica 🇨🇷 should stop by to learn and understand the Costa...
Read moreAs a place of faith it has 5 stars because it is, of course, one of the most important places in CR but as a touristic place... I give it a 3. Why? Bathrooms are awful. They are located outside and they are not a nice place. There is 1 private parking lot and it is small and somehow improvised. The other option is to park next to the street and I do not recommend it unless you want to pay an unofficial security guard and they don't take any responsibility in case of anything. Also there was a fight when we were getting holy water and there was no security right there. It took some minutes for some guards to show up and stop the fight. The worst was that the fight was because someone was drunk and a guy accused another guy who was travelling with his family for that and the drunk guy was other man that police did not notice and did...
