Playa Barrigona — Attraction in Sámara

Beautiful, secluded, very strong surf and rip tide. Highly recommend a 4x4 as you must cross a stream to get to this beach (see video). There are some locals selling beverages and snacks in the parking lot but otherwise it is without services. There is shade near the parking area and a beautiful shady grove about 1/4 mile walk to the right as you face the ocean. There is a private road that comes into this grove, which I believe leads to Mel Gibson's 500 acre compound. We LOVED this beach. Just be very careful as the surf is very strong and there are submerged rocks at both ends of the beach. Also tide pools at both ends of the beach to explore but you will need water shoes. Playa Barrigona is a beautiful secluded and uncrowded beach. Located about 30 minutes drive from Sámara. Much of the road is rough with many deep potholes (Nov) but is passable by 2wd vehicles. This is a remote non popular beach, wonderful with white sands and forest all around you. Little visited and only accessible by 4x4 car, especially during the rainy season. It is a beach about 2Km long and probably one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. No grocery stores nor restrooms are available nearby.
