THIS IS NOT AN EASY HIKE AND ITS DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY DURING RAINY SEASON. READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS HIKE.
While there is little elevation change, it’s not a flat trail and that does not mean it’s easy. At some places, the river crossing is quite high and with slick rocks, can be quite dangerous. The current can also be fairly strong in rainy season. At a certain point, the “trail” disappears and you are hiking straight up the river bed and through the river that is enclosed by canyon walls on all sides. THIS IS DANGEROUS IN THE RAINY SEASON. If a freak morning storm were to appear, you could absolutely get swept away by the river or stuck near the waterfall waiting god knows how long for the river to go down. You don’t have service so no one is going to be coming to help you. I think in the dry season, this risk would be negligible but it is very important to be aware of in the rainy season.
This is also not a maintained trail. It’s a jungle path and it’s very remote. That’s very cool for the extreme adventure who is a risk taker but if you are apprehensive about the dangers of the jungle, THIS HIKE IS NOT FOR YOU!!
There are places on the route that you are going to be climbing over slick boulders. My dog made it and did fine but I was not comfortable taking him on this trail, it was much harder than I expected and much more difficult than the reviews would lead you to believe.
The views are absolutely unbelievable and you are connecting with the land and the jungle in a way most people that visit Costa Rica are not going to have the opportunity to do. However that comes with a certain level of risk I think most travelers are unaware of, hence the point of this review. I truly do not think people realize the dangers and risks that come with this hike and it’s important to know.
If you are a risk-taking adventurer with luck on your side, this is going to be the hike of your life and you will absolutely love it!! If you’re like me, and you’ve been burned by some hardcore adventures and now you want to take it a little easier and expose yourself to less risk, THIS HIKE IS NOT FOR YOU!!!
No matter what you decide, you should 100% go with a guide. With the trail crossing the river 10 times each way and then disappearing at the end, it would be so easy to get lost. As I also mentioned, there are risks with this hike and you need a guide to help you avoid and be aware of the dangers, like which moss to not touch because it’s poisonous.
BOTTOM LINE: this hike is incredible and unique and a truly adventurous, remote, special experience BUT YOU ARE GOING AT YOUR OWN RISK. Think it through carefully before you decide to go out...
Read moreMost beautiful waterfall in the area, however you need to earn it. Difficultly is intermediate and it involves lots of river crossings. You pay the guy at the entrance and start your hike for 12 kms round trip. There is a grassed, open car park on Route 708 (the main road in Bajos del Toro) which is clearly marked. you need to pass through a private cattle farm to start the hike. The local guy who owns the farm is usually around in the yard (with cows everywhere), and he will open the gate for you and point you in the right direction. Follow the signs and you will get there. Water...
Read moreEpic epic waterfall, but for us it was around 50% hiking through shin deep mud, 30% wading through water (sometimes hip deep) and the rest was muddy trail. We wore water sandals and probably wouldn’t recommend- hiking boots or something with a grip would be good but just prepare yourself that everything gets soaked. Would 100% do again, we had the waterfall all to ourselves but do go earlier rather than later, the farmer was skeptical to let us in at 10. I think they are trying to suggest tours from now on instead of doing it yourself but we were fine and the track was easy...
