August 2019. We decided to return to Brisas Guardalavaca (4th time) because our kids were familiar with the place and could go anywhere without getting lost, most of the staff is great and because they use to make an extra effort with us as we are returning guests. Two months prior to our visit, I wrote the guest relations asking if they could book us the same room we had the year before. I also made sure to remind them a few times prior to our arrival to make sure we get it! We got to the hotel on August 13th and did not get the room we asked. The room they gave us had a defective air conditioning, it had holes in the door, one of the kids’ bed was an ‘army type’ metal bed with a 2 ¾ thick mattress. *Note there is a 20$ fee to use the safe as you must rent the lock to close it! Guest relation was able to give us the room we asked 2 days after we checked in; it wasn’t properly cleaned. There was a lot of hair on the washroom’s counter, the bath was greasy and rusty. There was some toothpaste on the sinks, the taps were leaking, the patio door was broken so it could not properly close (probably not helping with the bad air conditioning), the furniture was defective… There is a lot of accumulated dust here and there and a deep cleaning of the villa’s rooms would be required. *Some of our friends were in the main hotel and the rooms were better, renovated, cleaner and the A/C is working properly. As a returning guest, I saw a lot of changes in the last 10 years. To get 1 bottle of water per day for a family of 4 (2 kids under 12) is a very difficult challenge! The maid uses to leave one in the room but this year, we had to complain to the guest relations as we were not able to get free water or even buy some water from the store. We were told they had problems with the suppliers. At the bars, there was no lime and no mint. (no Mojito, no Ron Collins) and on top of this, there was no proper glasses to serve customers their cocktails, beer and wine. Everything was served in plastic goblets. There were only 2 ashtrays for the bars and the terrace, so people had to drop their cigarette’s butts on the floor. At the snack, there was no hot dogs; sometimes they had some, but they were serving them on toast because of a shortage in proper bread. Same thing with hamburgers. At the restaurant beside the beach where there is a 5-6 plates menu, only 2 were available: pasta and pork. The rest was out of stock. The beach is another hassle we had to deal with; since a few years, we see a lot more Cubans coming to the resort as guests and as locals using the beaches as “public beaches” Locals don’t seem to care about keeping the place clean. There is a lot of beer cans, empty rum bottles, plastic goblets, straw and other trash on the beach and in the water. Since the beach is a public place even in a resort, locals can sit on the beach beside the tourists. This is annoying as they sometimes think the towels provided to guests are gifts they can take when we are not looking, leaving us with the 15$ fee per lost/stolen towel when we checkout. (I had to pay for a stolen towel) There are way too much Cubans on the beach, and this keeps on getting worst year after year. Even the staff agrees on this. On the positive side, the staff is great as they are always trying to help us and get us what we request (if they can). There is a lot of new ‘trainee’ and they seem happy to work as they all smile! The food at the buffet is good; there is a lot of choice, it’s tasty and it is fresh. The Italian restaurant is very good, and the service is amazing! (Liset) The gardens are awesome and very clean. The gardeners are doing a great job! Lots of different flowers, trees and other exotic vegetation. There are grass crabs, lizards and other little friends that will keep your kids busy trying to catch them! Snorkeling is nice as there is coral and vegetation close to the shore. The animation is excellent, different show everyday. Conclusion: Next time, we will try something different!

My wife and I visited Brisas on the first week of April 2024 for 7 days and we had a great time. The resort is expansive with both a hotel and villa section. We stayed in a villa on the third floor with a nice ocean view. The staircases in the villas are quite elaborate and beautiful. If you have mobility issues you should request a ground floor. I would say that the resort appears to be very wheelchair accessible. There seems to be a lot of attention to return customers at the resort which was nice to see. The food was plentiful and pretty good considering the food shortages. I expect there would have much nicer selection if the shortages were not happening. We usually ate our breakfast and lunch at the Seafood la Carte in the villas or the Cuban a la carte (you get full service at these). We also enjoyed burgers at the pool area snack bar. We spend most evenings enjoying wine and a beautiful oceanview on outdoor couches the Tea House that is located on the walkway on the beach. Our server Yuslades (I have spelled this wrong) was friendly and fun to talk with (and speaks excellent English!) The gardens at the resort are beautiful and well cared for. The is a beach walkway shared by all the resorts which was nice. The beach is clean with soft sand and the ocean is warm with clear turquoise water so typical of Cuba. You can wade/swim out to over your head before getting to a seagrass area. There were always lots of sun loungers available and pretty good shade in the villa beach section. Off-the-beach snorkelling was a bit of a disappointment- there are some fish to see and a bit of coral. For excursions we went down to the Nautical shed and hired a catamaran to take us out to a nearby reef which was absolutely beautiful. We also took a horse-drawn wagon ride through the countryside with Alcides Sarmiento where we visited a farm and the town of Guardavalaca which was great. There is a market outside the resort on the weekends which is awesome. It was excellent with all kinds of different things, many of which are truly handmade. The entertainment was pretty good with live performers every night in the lobby and shows at the stage. The had a Cuban Day and Canada Day party in the afternoons which was fun. The pools were clean and the swim up bars were also good. We went during a food shortage in Cuba. There was lots of beer and wine at the resort which was good but there was also a complete lack of soda which was bad. That meant no Cuba Libres, Mojitos or fun drinks which we really missed. The villa room itself was nice with a beautiful Oceanview. It was cleaned daily and our ‘maid’ was friendly and left some wonderful ‘towel’ art on the bed. There was always water for showers and for the most part it was hot depending on the time of day. The bed was comfortable and the AC worked. In summary, the beach was good, the resort was well-maintained the staff were friendly. We enjoyed our stay at Brisas and would return again.

Making a briefing description I can say I have spent the worst three days of my holidays in this hotel. The service in the buffet is awful, the people from the catering with long faces serve the watery food that they offer everyday. Long lines of cuban citizens are every where there is food service. Lines to enter to the restaurant, and line to line to take the food that you finally will eat. After quite time seated on the table, still you are waiting for the service of water, or something you will drink. To end up this nightmare there are many specialized restaurants very difficult to acced, and it's important to point out that is better do not go in there, because if the main restaurant is horrible,to eat in the specialized restaurant is the worst thing. I don't have the words to describe the food and the service. It's a pity that such place like this hotel, with the installations that it counts, is in this condition.

Visited July 5, 2019 – our 4th trip to resort & maybe our last...read on. Booked through Air Transat. Air Transat forgot visas to fill out on plane. Created huge back up & problem at Cuban Frank Pais airport. People scrambling to get paperwork filled out before customs; very chaotic trying to get visas; people pushing through lineups - no order; travel visa is REQUIRED to enter Cuba. Delayed our 1.5 hour bus ride (includes scheduled stops to other resorts) to resort from airport. Arrived late & checked in immediately; not given towel voucher & had return next morning to get one; front desk staff should do automatically upon check in. Had to ask for a room safe key; there's a fee! shouldn't be one - maybe a deposit. AI resorts should have NO additional fees. Posted no smoking signs NOT enforced-disgusting for non-smokers. Clocks at front desk incorrect, no posted updated forecast; lack of attention to detail. Personal & luggage golf cart trip to villas available. Grounds very well maintained. Can’t do anything about visitors who do not respect property. When snorkelling, we removed LOTS of garbage!! Beech garbage & recycling bins are all labelled differently & color coded differently, confusing for guests. Wonder if recycling actually happens? Smell of septic system, along the beach walkway, is sometimes unbearable. Amount of plastic garbage & waste in & around resort was staggering. Plastic plates & straws need to be eliminated; paper better alternative. Plastic cups & straws found everywhere! Resort should step up & create programs to encourage & promote environmental responsibility. Guest should be provided with a reusable cup, if don’t bring their own. If the guest loses their cup they must pay for a new one, like with towels & keys. If oceans & beaches are destroyed by plastic waste then tourism will suffer (one of the reasons why we are thinking of not returning). Day dining room lights unnecessary, only adds to heat in buffet dining area. Having fans circulating the air would be better. Lots of good employees but some stand around socialize with each other & guests wait long periods to have drinks refilled but NOT if you are a tipper; no tip at every meal means NO good service. Buffet has declined; meat was VERY dry due to sitting out under heat lamps. Pork roast was so dry it was completely inedible. Have to check bag at front door; makes things difficult; had to take personal belongings out & carry them with us. Food was mediocre & lacked variety & quality we have previously experienced; may be result of low season but should not be an excuse to lower standards. Churros & ice cream bar always popular! Pizza bar, patio grill & bar, all under one seating area, VERY understaffed & under stocked!! Waited one hour for service; not all menu items were available. A very popular area, which needs MORE staff and stock (food)! Rooms: beer a nice touch upon entering into our room but no bottle opener. Returning guests get bottle of rum! Coffee makers in the rooms but coffee pods difficult to get; sometimes room attendants don’t have supplies. No spoons, coffee creamer or sugar either. Coffee pods not environmentally friendly. A note saying we received a complimentary bottle of water but given a bottle of Cuban cola instead; didn’t have water. Soap in bathroom is VERY strongly scented (need unscented). Bathroom in need of some repair, shower head actually an old tub faucet with a shower head screwed into it; difficult to stand up under shower head, no hot or cold water- always luke warm. AC was substandard; room was warm not cool. Beds absolutely horrible; no support or cushioning. Room attendant, Ino, was fabulous; we always request her area, nice & attentive but can only give what she has. Room attendants, not given everything they need to provide consistency & great customer service. This positive criticism - meant to help resort improve. Not convinced we will return based on our...
