If you are staying anywhere in Varadero, take the time to go underground at Cueva de Ambrosio. Admission fees: bonus guide with a flashlight. Bring a flashlight! Bring the kids!

We were nearing the end of our stay and had not yet visited Varahicacos Ecological Reserve, which is the kind of thing that happens when you travel with a group with different interests. Not only was it the last day but a short hour before the park closed (sunset).

A complete cave experience for a novice: Vegetation, geology, pictographs, fauna and flora! The caves have high ceilings (over 8 feet). Though the occasional openings you can see the trees and vegetation growing above, but there are the odd plants whimsically growing on the cave floor. As you walk from ''room'' through ''room'', there are bats, stalagmites and stalactites, an interesting selection of pre-columbian (maybe) cave drawings and visible stratification of stone, pebbles and fossilized vegetation formed by...

The cave was quite a bit bigger than I expected it to be. It was also completely dry, which surprised me as I saw from other posted pictures that the cave had water on the ground. There were also less bats than I expected, but maybe that is a good thing as we did not feel nervous about the few that were flying around. Lots of bats were hanging from the ceiling, were we could look at them nicely. There were drawings on the walls that the cave guide told us were pre-Columbus, but I strongly doubt that. Most likely pre-2018. Still it was a great cave and cool to see the...

I love this place so much I returned with my daughter so she could see the 5 different species of bats flying around the cave. Wow what a natural wonder. I have done 8 caves so far in Cuba and this one is small but SOOOOO interesting. It has the most tribal art and some of it goes back 2000 years. When you are done rent a taxi for the day and go swim in Saturno Cave, visit La Dionisia Cafetal, visit Cueva Bellamar on your way to visit Matanzas. So much to see and do. Do NOT go on a tour. Just rent a taxi. If you are on a budget just share the taxi with...

Awesome little hike on the west side of Varadero. Lots of biodiversity. We saw bats, birds, and lizards however according to the guide, snakes and crabs are also present. This is a self guided tour consisting of 15 points of interest ranging from unique plants, to rock formations, etc. The caves are dispersed throughout a few different sections and consist of many rooms, crevices as well as a burial site of a Cuban smuggler(?) Entry fee is USD 5 per person, totally worth it for a relaxing walk when you need a break from the excitement and intensity of the resorts.

There are bats in the cave which are really what make the experience very cool. It is nice for an hour or 2, the cave isn't all that big. The bats are benign. I went there with my boyfriend, very fun, and felt kind of bad for the poor bats since they were sleeping. There were (supposedly) some indigenous paintings on the walls but there weren't all that many and I found them dubious though I'm no archaeologist.
