It's a large zoo with lots of animals. I've visited shortly after the place was devastated by a storm in 2019; there were uprooted trees and stumps, many of the glass panes that separate the animals from you have visibly popped, and even some of the animals are hurt.
There's a lot to see, especially when you can go through some of the animals' enclosures, others are, however, only available when riding the safari train. A prairie dog came so close to me, I could almost reach to pet it. The cercopithecini monkeys also have an accessible enclosure, however you should be careful - they like to steal stuff. Even glasses. If you have to wear glasses (bad vision), consider not going there, or at least hold them with your hands at all times. Put everything in your bags, or deep inside your pockets. Close all zippers, and hold the bag(s) tightly or put them on. If possible, use the side squeeze clips over your chest to secure the backpack.
If you want to be there for feeding with commentary, arrive in the morning. The commentary will most likely be in Czech, but you can try to ask the commentator for an English version.
There is a restaurant near the entrance serving overexpensive Czech food, and many small fast food spots all over the place. If you can, try to come as full as possible, maybe try to bring some sandwiches as lunch if you're trying to save.
From my own experience, the place is really nice, but still pretty devastated by the Eberhard storm. Some animals are pretty depressed, other are having none of that and having babies.
Fun fact: Did you know, that parrots can develop bad habits? In this zoo, you can see an Ara, who plucks out her own feathers. She has likely developed this at her previous owner...
Read moreSo, my wife and I came here 9 years ago and it was one of our favorite zoos of all time--calm, built into the forests and hills, stocked with interesting local fauna that many zoos don't have, a really chill and inviting place. We couldn't wait for the kids to be old enough to appreciate it.
That zoo was nowhere to be found when we finally returned last weekend. What we found was a jam-packed amusement park of the most exotic animals imaginable. It was great! But not built for the crowds it attracts and wants to attract. EVERYTHING here is interesting. There's something to !wow! about around every corner--if only you could stop long enough to appreciate it or get eighteen pairs of shoulders out of the way long enough to admire.
The enclosures are beautiful and well thought out. The animals are safe and have territory. The bats--the bathouse is unbelievable! The white wolves look a little dolorous but still, they have half the park to roam. You hope the giraffes don't step on the prairie dogs! You can't believe the size of the boa constrictor. But you want all these humans to go somewhere for lunch so you can see it all.
A great zoo! But very packed. And there's a tower. I don't know why but it's kind of neat. Highly recommend if you like zoos that care more about the animals than the people, which we do. Oh, also though, there's lots of opportunity for snacks and food, it's very well stocked....
Read moreI should start by saying that I am not a fan of Zoos in general. It seems like they are based on exploiting animals to entertain us humans. Yes, I know that in modern times they carry out research and breeding programs. But in a way, isn't that just humans solving problems we created in the first place? Anyway back to Olomouc Zoo. There are some interesting animals to see here. But they are in many cases confined to relatively small enclosures. There are a few unique exhibits here. For example the bat house, where the bats are free to fly among the visitors was interesting. But in the middle of the enclosure was a fennec fox in a very small space. There are lots of areas in the Zoo that are under construction, so maybe when it's all finished it will be better. Finally, you can climb an observation tower which affords great views of the surrounding countryside, the city of Olomouc, and the nearby basilica. Of course this didn't have to be...
