This place is such a wonderful delight to visit. Huge gardens and a bee hut area. This place used to be so self efficient they even had their own fish volts and an ice chamber. In the actual Manor House they had a knights armor up on display and various rooms had music playing along with ambient noises to make your imagination go wild in the banquet room.
It was a pleasure being here and the staff was nice and local to the area so they can tell you some of the stuff you might miss out on reading on the inforboards. Various hidden passageways in the woods around are like wandering around like Alice in wonderland. The Manor House also has a cellar that goes on for ever underneath the ground floor.
We enjoyed our stay even without all the events we know they have here in the high seasons. There is a stabel with various horse carts and machines throughout history.
Something to note is the lack of handicapped pathways for wheelchair access. Its stairs in the Manor House exclusively. Please do donate when you visit because the place only runs on donations and ticket sales that are about 7 dollars /100 dkk
In the manor house they have sorted the floors in the centuries that are displayed and the ground floor is where you start with the 1600's private church room.
Have a great stay and enjoy because...
Read moreGammel Estrup is a nice historical site that is well maintained and has beautiful grounds, there are many rooms furnished and decorated with both original and recreated items. The entry ticket also gives you access to the grøn museum, which is a walk through the history of farming. I would recommend a visit especially if you like visiting castles and old estates, the one downside is that both Gammel Estrup and the Grøn Museum are fairly static, so there isn't much for younger children to interact with, which is okay but it means that how excited and engaged they will be almost entirely depends on how good of a storyteller you are. Understandably a lot of the set pieces are cordoned off, which makes sense for preservation purposes, but does make you feel a little disconnected.
Overall, it was a nice experience and worth the time, the staff we interacted with were all very friendly, and there are a few activities for children like stilts they can walk on that are fun too. You could easily spend 1-2 hours here, more if you take it slow and have a...
Read moreNot much to do here besides look at some animals (rabbits, chickens, and goats). You can see an old house to learn how it was like for the workers to live there. And there was a HUGE museum about farm and food industry history. The museum was pretty boring but also overwhelming in my opinion.
It was hyggeligt to pick apples and make apple cider with them. But maybe a bit over prised for a liter for 50 DKK.
It was also hyggeligt that you could buy cake that is made with an old Danish recipe and in the old kitchen in this manor. Not that it was fantastic by any means, but...
