This part of Iceland is famous for of course the black volcanic sand and the various rock and cliff formations.
Here the highlight is the Dyrhólaey arch. Visible from far away and also from the top of the viewing platform. You could walk all the way from here to the cliffs and stacks on the eastern end of the beach. We didn't park at the lighthouse, but at the smaller parking lot down on the east side of the area. It makes a wonderful walk up to the lighthouse. Just about 25 minutes or so. But with wonderful views all the way up and back down. It does come with a short but steep stair section. But worth it.
The landscape is so unique and magical. You feel like you've landed on another planet. The arch is is pretty big and you will get nice views of it from far or from the top. There are visitors by the lighthouse. But if you choose to walk up here, you won't meet many folks. Very nice and peaceful.
It was a cloudy and rainy day. But that didn't make it less pretty. On the contrary, it added to the magical mood. Surely a must-do after visiting the...
Read moreAbsolutely amazing view of the Icelandic Southern coast. You can see black sand beaches going in both directions with a little lighthouse up on top. We went on a relatively cloudy day but the view was still absolutely amazing. This was one of our favorite spots. There's a small parking lot at the top near the lighthouse. I wouldn't take a big vehicle or a bus up there.
There are some trails up there in and around the lighthouse area. It all looks like relatively new construction. The advised if you have small kids that the edge is only a small chain in some spots. May want to take that into account. We went during the week but I could see this place being very busy in the summer and on the weekends.
This is also fairly close to the black sand beaches that are a tourist major attraction. So you can see the beach that you're probably going to hit on your next stop. But definitely from a higher bunker...

I’ve been coming to Dyrhólaey since I was a child, and no matter how often I visit, the view always feels new. The light, the ocean, the sky — somehow it’s always changing. Standing up there and looking out over the endless black sand beaches and the volcanic rocks rising out of the Atlantic is something truly iconic and deeply Icelandic.
There’s a calmness and a raw beauty here that’s hard to describe unless you’ve felt it yourself. Whether it’s a calm summer evening or a stormy winter day, Dyrhólaey never disappoints.
It’s a place that stays with you — a part of Iceland that feels wild, real, and unforgettable.
Five stars from...
