We visited the waterfall at 3pm on a Tuesday afternoon. Note if you take a bus or taxi, it won't be able to bring you to the Google maps pin, but to a large plaza. Someone was there to guide us in the right direction (through a de-sanitation sprayer...COVID-19). As you head to the back of the plaza, you'll pass through an archway and continue past shops, eventually making a left turn to the entrance. Fee is $.50 per person as of July 2022. Many shops sold bug repellent and I saw other reviews mention it, but we didn't have any bug encounters. The trail is made of large stones that are that awkward size where it hurts to step on them. After a 10 minute walk, you'll reach a bridge with a good view of the falls. The rest of the trails resemble a construction site, as it seems mudslides have wrecked many paths. It's wet and muddy. There is a lot of construction going on with few workers from what we saw.
After the bridge, turning to your left reveals two paths. 1) The left path, which stays level, heads to the falls where you can climb over slippery rocks and get closer, but it doesn't seem worth it. The water was lapping against the rocks so you may get wet, and the trail basically becomes a river shoreline. 2) the second trail heads up the mountain and is how you get to the cave--the best part of this trip. Follow the trail less than 5 minutes and you can walk into a cave which takes you right to the rushing river. It's pretty neat. The cave is an L-shape which bends to the left. It's impossible to get lost. Maybe 8 meters in length. Aside from that, there's not much else I would recommend, but it was cheap and only took...
Read moreThis was a wonderful part of our Tourbylocals day. We went shopping at the local outdoor market before heading to the falls. The cobble stone walk from entrance of the indigenous peoples area took some attention to your footing since the stones were not a flat surface. I believe that it would be very difficult for anyone that needed canes or a walker. As we walked through the forested area we could hear the sound of the falling water and the air became heavy with mist. The wooden bridge across the river was not in perfect condition and could be a problem for anyone with a problem walking. Across the bridge the foot path was a mixture of mud and rocks both small and large. We were lucky that our guide Elizabeth brought us on a day that the local indigenous people we at the falls for a ceremony and had Llama with them. The people were very welcoming to us when our guide explained to them who we were. They allowed us to walk among the Llama and one of the animals in particular couldn’t seem to get enough of being close to us. All of the people and animals were very friendly to us. We loved this part of the day. The walk back was on a parallel but different path that fewer stones but more mud. This was a perfect afternoon in Ecuador, even if we did arrive back at the car a bit damp from all the mist in the air...
Read morePeguche is falling bad there is now a feud between owners, so you now have 2 peguches, the first is orderly clean and is all nature, the walk is nice and you can watch a lot of green, the other part is cause the feud they said to us the waterfall belong to them so there is another fee in front of the waterfall and you have to pay again to go to the waterfall.
The other part also is dirty messy and has no order, there is a place upside with restaurants but is absolute chaos, they have ice creams, coconuts but there is no water the machines sometimes doesnt work, or the machines are elsewhere they have now a place where they put buddas, statues of otavalo woman , goblins asking for money, human bones, and a grotesque cow head with blood. Has no absolute sense and is gross to look at, the chaos is stress pure stress.
Also if you dont pay the second fee, they got angry very angry just for asking why...and justifying their fee with we are the owners.
So i believe this is going bad cause there is no solution, no authorities and they do whatever they want...i almost suggest them that put a dragon ball goku with a cuban habano dancing with the goblin brujas shaking...
