Haltiala is home to Helsinki's largest preserved fields and our city's largest forest. The scenically and culturally-historically valuable fields of Haltiala have been cultivated since the 15th century. The city has reserved the area for the recreational use of its residents. Networks of tracks cross the fields in winter.

The name Haltiala is a translation made in the 1940s of the area's medieval place name Tomtebacka. According to current knowledge, however, the old name meant only the place of human habitation or a plot (plot) instead of the world of elves.

There are three farm centers in the Haltiala area, Tuomarinkylä manor, Haltiala farm and Niskala. Until the beginning of the 20th century, these farms with fields and forests belonged to the Kavaleff family, who lived in the Tuomarinkylä manor. Jacob Kavaleff ran a nursery in Tuomarinkylä, and he planted special tree species in the area. The trees in the Niskala arboretum are also from his time.

There are written mentions of the estate of Haltiala as early as the 16th century. In the 19th century, Haltiala was a representative manor milieu. The maintenance of the garden stopped during the 20th century, the manor building was demolished after a fire in the 1950s, and the environment fell into disrepair. The surroundings of the farm and the old garden by the river were renovated in 2001-2002. Old roads border the banks of the Vantaanjoki
