Malla Nature Reserve is a striking and unique area near the Swedish–Finnish–Norwegian border, marked by the border stone Treriksröset. Its young geological formations and calciferous soil foster rare fell plants (I used an app to identy them).

The marked summer trail, part of the Nordic Kalottireitti, stretches approximately 11 km from the parking area (some food is sold there) suitable for day trips (such as to Pikku‑Malla) or longer hikes for those with good fitness willing to tackle steep climbs and descents; I would classify the trail as tough and wet. Halfway along the trail lies the dramatic Kitsiputous waterfall, you can get really close to it. There is an open wilderness hut near Lake Kuohkimajärvi (Guohkkemašjávri), which is free for hikers and accommodates up to six people; no reservation is needed, but space is not guaranteed. A shared rental (reservable) hut is also available at the same location—booking a paid bed for one or two nights is possible . Camping is only permitted in the immediate vicinity of the open wilderness hut; otherwise, camping or overnight stays elsewhere—including near Treriksröset—are prohibited!! Hikers must stay strictly on the marked path during the snow-free season; off-trail movement is not allowed. I experienced a heavy presence of biting midges during my visit—a common nuisance in summer in northern...

Great nature reserve it has Kitsi waterfall were the water is so clean you can drink it! There also is the famous 3 country border stone. You can take the trail to summit pikku-malla mountain as well. It's also historical with war era constructions.

The nature and views here are amazing. People are required to fallow the trails because it's a nature reserve. Only government biologists are allowed to...

I started with the Malla boatride (20 € one way or 30 € there and back, cash or card when the weather permits) and then visited the 3 border stone. After that i hiked back to Kilpisjärvi and also hiked up the Malla peak. Beautiful scenery along the way. Be advised: There is a long stretch with hard passing due to rockslides if you have problems hiking or a...
