The gondola lift is closed 50% of the time and often also the only other "huippu" anchor lift that takes you to the top. The same goes for the other side of the resort which often closes the top lifts due to "wind conditions". As a result you can't access 50% of the best slopes. Been going to Ylläs for 10 years and lifts are usually always closed approx 3 days out of a 6 day holiday. Frustrating to pay full price for tickets and only have access to 50% of slopes. This seldomly happens anywhere else and never in the Alps.
Its a shame as the slopes and altitude difference are among the best in Finland. Ylläs should seriously consider investing in a better gondola (double cable instead of single) and lift infrastructure that does not require closing down due to minor weather conditions. Tip: always check skilift status online before going and purchasing...
Read moreBeautiful place, but the gondola was shut all 4 days that we were there due to weather, and then technical issues, as the temperatures were around -1c to +1c, so water was forming into ice on the cables of the gondola. This feels like a solvable problem and one they must experience reasonably frequently. It's suprising and frustrating that they don't already have a solution for it. We've skied across Europe and never experienced shutdowns like this, for such reasons. It seems very odd.
Given the Gondola was shut, the queues were much longer than normal, and in pursuit of finally getting to the top of the mountain via Huippu, we had to queue for almost an hour.
Overall, the spot would be amazing if it was better managed, but unfortunately it is currently not. We loved Finland, but next time if we returned, we'd ski in Levi or one of the...
Read moreVery bad service. We took 3h tickets as we havent been skiing for 20 years. It went super well, and we asked some locals if we can extend the tickets. They said they just did the same thing yesterday and just paid the difference (3h vs one day). So we went to the ticket office, and we were told it is not possible to change the tickets. We said we can of course pay additional fees for it, but no. It was 5pm and we just wanted to ski 2h more and pay for it, but day ticket was like 59€ and 3h was 6€ cheaper, so why would we pay 60€ extra at that point. Totally fine to pay eg 20€ fee per person for ticket change + 6€ difference, but this was ridiculous. Also no comment on the fact that locals said that they got it...
