If you’re into photography, nature walks, or simply want a peaceful place to relax, this is a good spot. However, it’s more suitable for picnics and photo shoots rather than educational or engaging tourist experiences. The institute is primarily academic, and only limited parts are accessible to the public. You can explore the gardens, the main corridor, and a few open spaces, but internal research areas, labs, and training facilities are restricted for visitors—which is understandable. There's also a Kendriya Vidyalaya (KVS) school inside the campus for staff children, which adds a touch of community life to the otherwise institutional environment. Now coming to the downsides—the canteen is a major disappointment. It is poorly maintained, unhygienic, and the food quality is extremely bad. It’s dirty, and there seems to be no proper supervision or cleanliness. I would highly recommend not eating at the canteen. If you’re visiting, plan your meals elsewhere. For photographers, the place is a dream come true. The wide open spaces, stunning architecture, and the vintage corridors offer excellent backgrounds for photoshoots—especially pre-wedding, travel, or portfolio shoots. There is an entry fee, which is very affordable—₹10 per person, but if you’re entering with a bike or car, parking/vehicle charges are higher. You’ll need to collect a ticket at the entrance. Drones are strictly not allowed, and security keeps an eye out for such activity. If you’re planning drone photography, drop the idea to avoid trouble. One thing I really appreciated was the residential quarters for scientists and staff. These are large, beautiful, cottage-style houses that look serene and very well laid out. It adds charm and gives a colonial bungalow vibe. Another noteworthy point is that the dense forest cover around FRI helps regulate Dehradun’s climate. It truly feels like a mini-forest within the city. You can feel a significant difference in temperature and air quality inside the campus compared to outside—it’s cooler and cleaner.
