Jean Cocteau House — Attraction in Évry

Highly recommended! If you enjoy the writing, art, design, film, life-story of Jean Cocteau, then this is a visit that must not be missed. I was guided in English which was a real privilege and I'm grateful to the house and its curators for making such a thing possible. Of course French and other languages are available. But to have such intimate access to the life and vision of Cocteau is a powerful and memorable experience. We're fortunate that people took the time to preserve this heritage and make it accessible. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Also note that within walking distance is the chapel where Jean Cocteau is buried and which he decorated. Lors de ma récente visite à la maison de Jean Cocteau à Milly-la-Forêt, j’ai été frappé par l’atmosphère singulière du lieu, chargé d’histoire et de poésie. Il est indéniable que découvrir cet espace où l’artiste a vécu ses dernières années permet de mieux comprendre son univers, ses inspirations et sa sensibilité. La chapelle qu’il a décorée de fresques est également un témoignage touchant de son lien avec l’art et la spiritualité.

Cependant, cette visite m’a aussi amené à m’interroger sur l’ampleur de l’hommage qui lui est rendu. Bien que Jean Cocteau ait été un artiste aux multiples talents — poète, cinéaste, dessinateur, dramaturge — il me semble que l’importance qui entoure sa mémoire aujourd’hui est quelque peu disproportionnée par rapport à la portée réelle de son œuvre dans l’histoire artistique et culturelle.

Il ne s’agit nullement de nier son talent ni son originalité, mais de remettre en perspective son héritage. D’autres artistes de son époque, parfois plus novateurs ou influents, n’ont pas bénéficié d’un tel traitement mémoriel. On peut donc se demander si ce culte autour de sa personne ne relève pas davantage d’un mythe romantique entretenu que d’un jugement critique mesuré.

Such an enchanting and inspiring experience. A wondrous place to explore and discover! We set foot in this stunning abode untouched by time where history and art are shared by knowledgeable (and available) tour guides. Very enjoyable to browse into the small shop: so many books and local specialties.
