Fascinating historical site with very helpful staff. There was also a lovely food truck where we could get chips, burgers, pancakes, ice creams, coffees and drinks. The only downside as an English speaker was that there are no signs in English and the tour and video are fully in French. I have some French but children do not. There is a small English handout that you can read yourself but it would be lovely if it included some more of what's covered in the tour. Also, I would caution anyone with mobility restrictions similar to my own from taking the tour. I use one walking stick and move at a slow pace and I found I had to abandon the tour after a few minutes because of the pace of the guide, the hills up and down and the 40 steps to get to the lift shaft. However, I did enjoy passing the hour of the tour in the sunshine outside the visitor centre in the beautiful mountain surroundings and the staff even offered me a coffee as I waited for my family....

Cette plongée dans les profondeurs du sous sol nous entraîne aussi des dizaines d’années en arrière quand des familles entières, s’enfonçaient ainsi sous terre pour quelques sous, le père au pic, les enfants au ramassage, la mère au transport. La mécanisation amènera ensuite avec elle un bruit assourdissant, une atmosphère torride, des conditions de travail inimaginables et pourtant bien réelles. On apprendra les dangers du grisou, la tâche du pénitent qui porte sa perche enflammée, les risques du boutefeu, les cuffats pour descendre les travailleurs avec les galibots perchés sur les rebords de la cuve, prédécesseurs des ascenseurs. Le mot claustrophobie ne fait pas partie de leur vocabulaire, la peur non plus, mais probablement une sourde angoisse devait les accompagner au fond et imprégner leurs proches restés en haut. On éprouvera du respect pour le travail et le courage de ces hommes et femmes, longtemps exploités par des entrepreneurs avides de profits ne prenant aucun risque sauf celui de perdre leur argent, qui a permis la modernisation industrielle du pays.

On appréciera également la guide pour son professionnalisme et sa passion. Elle a su rendre la visite vivante et passionnante.
