So, as much as I would like to rate this higher, hard facts need to be told.

(as of August 2016) The castle is in an extremely poor state, and, seeing as they are reconstructing it with medieval means, it will stay that way for many years to come, so I didn't think it was really that impressive.

The view however, is definitely worth it (top of a cliff) , as long as you're not expecting to see even half a medieval castle still standing.

THAT BEING SAID. The medieval village under the castle is definitely very impressive and there are some nice gift shops there, including a woodworker who does some interesting necklaces. (really, go and check it out)

All in all its a very rustic place that fits in well with the medieval atmosphere, and even if the castle itself isn't too interesting, the village more than...

Amazing Fortress rising up, imperious, majestic, powerfully presiding over the Aveyron gorges, the vineyards of Gaillac and the village of Penne of which it is a jewel. Nestled at the top of a peak, it is a testimony to the history of the region. This masterpiece of medieval architecture has been open to the public since 2010 and has undergone extensive renovation and conservation work.

Listed as a Historic Monument since 1902 and a Grand Site of Occitania, the Fortress offers a true journey through history. Occupied since at least the year 1000, this high place of Catharism was coveted in turn by the Counts of Toulouse, a King of Aragon, the Kings of France and throughout the Hundred Years' War by supporters of the...

One of the best historical sites I have visited anywhere. The castle dominates the village from the road in, and the walk up to it through impressive old gates and narrow streets helps set the expectation. I was passing on a long journey and they went out of their way to let me in in their lunch break, the price was very reasonable too. Once inside, there are numerous information boards and an excellent small museum (behind a slightly forbidding looking door). The views out across the local area are breathtaking as well. Well worth a visit, on first view it looks barely real, like something from a...

So glad we accidentally visited the medieval village of Penne with this imposing fortress built upon a rock overlooking the river and surrounding countryside. The fortress is now privately owned by an architect who is gradually restoring it. The ancient houses are still lived in. Whilst we were there, we saw a baker making bread in the old oven for that evening's market which we also attended.

Fascinating stuff, a sprawling fortress ruin in the process of being renovated, yet a much better insight into the Bastides than those chateaux still standing. Comes complete with detailed documentation in various languages on the origins, historical development and the social context of the Chateau, all within the charming old town of Penne.
