In short: La Balme (specifically) is a very solid ski area for advanced skiers, with steep red and black slopes and freeride areas (provided there is enough fresh snow). Beginners will be happier on the Clusaz side of the resort.
The height of the domain is impressive, leaving you the option to run down 1200m in height at once from the top to the bottom. The view from the top toward the Mont Blanc is worth the Instagram stop.
On a busy day you may struggle a bit on the slopes with the crowd, and overconfident skiers going faster than they can handle (there are a lot of those during the February holiday weeks).

Balme es uno de los sectores del dominio de esquí de La Clusaz-Manigod, conectado con pistas y remontes con el resto del dominio y accesible con el mismo forfait de La Clusaz.
Nota: hay un forfait Domaines des Aravis que te permite esquiar también en la vecina estación de Le Grand-Bornand, pero no hay conexión por pistas y remontes y hay que viajar en coche o autobús.
Se trata del sector más selecto y el más famoso dentro del mundillo del freeride, popularizado por su increíble esquiador local: Candide Thovex. En la zona hay muchos recorridos fuera de pista que le han valido una gran reputación entre la comunidad freerider. Sin duda es el rincón de LCZ (La Clusaz) donde verás a más esquiadores de este perfil.
En este sector las pistas son exigentes: largas, con pendientes acusadas y con bastante desnivel. Incluso la pista azul que llega hasta su zona media requiere cierta habilidad (debutantes abstenerse). De ahí para arriba el nivel requerido sube aún más.
Desde el Col de Balme, techo del sector, se puede disfrutar de unas magníficas vistas sobre el Mont-Blanc (ver fotos).
Importante: para esquiar hacia otros sectores de La Clusaz evita la azul Le Var si no quieres darte una paliza remando. La que vuelve más arriba en el bosque es mucho mejor: Le Plan (ver fotos) Me lo agradecerás.

Probably the best ski area nearby. But be aware that the normal vagueness of ski run denotation applies.
