So many names, so many nameless, so young, so much loss of life, loss to families and finally to their countries? To my mind war has always been unimaginable and yet sometimes war is necessary thinking WW2 but WW1 was and remains at least in my mind the single most unimaginable conflict. The Arras memorial in its silent lonely beauty evokes emotions seldom touched or felt as the all embracing memorial guards row upon row of long silenced witnesses to a slaughter unparalleled in modern western history and all for a reason I still can not decern? I can not imagine the horror that these young men endured, the pain that they would have undoubtedly have suffered but I hold them above all else for their humanity however that may have been expressed or seen and that to my mind makes each and every one of them truly heroic. I can not add a photograph partly because so many already exist and further I do not feel that I have either the right or the permission of those who rest here to take photographs of where...

A beautiful memorial in the centre of Arras.

The Arras memorial is actually several memorials to the Commonwealth all put together in one location. Here at the memorial you will see Americans Germans Canadians British New Zealand South Africans as well as other people that help the Commonwealth during the war. There is also a Russian grave on site.

I would recommend you plan at least 45 minutes to view and appreciate this location.

Of special note is the German memorials mixed with the Commonwealth graves.

At the far end of the cemetery you will also find a American Colonel who is memorialized in...

We went as a group with the Somme Society ,A beutifull cemitary with one of our members family recorded on a panal. The site is being used for Wedding photos on the inside on the blank sandstone walls . A Muslim wedding was using the Cemetary ,with piles of Pizza Boxes on the benches and a Total lack of respect to the Fallen . Neadless to say they were evicted with no doubt as to our feelings towards them . This is not...

Beautiful place to visit. Came with a large group at 11am and we had it to ourselves. Wonderfully maintained with beautiful flowers. Huge stone memorials provide a wonderful entrance while blocking out the noise from the streets making it very peaceful inside. We got to see German soldiers buried here and done so with respect. Their graves are maintained and some have new marble stones when theirs were too old or damaged.

This memorial is dedicated to 35,942 Commonwealth soldiers who died in World War One in the Arras sector of France and have no known grave. It does not include the Australian and Canadian missing dead, who are instead listed on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial and the Vimy Memorial respectively. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
