So many names, so many nameless, so young, so much loss of life, loss to families and finally to their countries? To my mind war has always been unimaginable and yet sometimes war is necessary thinking WW2 but WW1 was and remains at least in my mind the single most unimaginable conflict. The Arras memorial in its silent lonely beauty evokes emotions seldom touched or felt as the all embracing memorial guards row upon row of long silenced witnesses to a slaughter unparalleled in modern western history and all for a reason I still can not decern? I can not imagine the horror that these young men endured, the pain that they would have undoubtedly have suffered but I hold them above all else for their humanity however that may have been expressed or seen and that to my mind makes each and every one of them truly heroic. The Arras memorial is actually several memorials to the Commonwealth all put together in one location. Here at the memorial you will see Americans Germans Canadians British New Zealand South Africans as well as other people that help the Commonwealth during the war. There is also a Russian grave on site.
I would recommend you plan at least 45 minutes to view and appreciate this location.
Of special note is the German memorials mixed with the Commonwealth graves.
