Château de Couches — Attraction in Autun

This chateau is incredibly disorganised and does not honour bookings made. I booked a special event through their website called a “La Pièce de Boeuf”. The deal included a tour of the estate, followed by an aperitif, and five course meal celebrating beef with matching wines. This deal was available only this Saturday and Sunday. Receiving a confirmation email we were looking forward to this event. When we arrived we were asked to immediately sit in the restaurant and told that we could order a three course lunch from their daily blackboard - which didn’t include any beef dishes. As this was not what we had booked we showed them our booking again as well as the event on their own website. Those we dealt with seemed to have no awareness of their own event, or made any attempt to find out more from management. They offered us a glass of wine as our aperitif outside but couldn’t offer a tour of the estate. By this time it was obvious that we weren’t going to be offered the deal we had booked and that the team really couldn’t care. So, unfortunately, we had no other alternative...

Visiting the chateau de Couches is a nice experience. It is true that the main building is not open for visits, but for € 6 one gets to see a good deal. The tower, the chapel and the garden behind the castle are worth it. Good explanation sheets available. Nice people at the reception. Nice views. Some of the trees in the garden are magnificient. Parking outside of the castle was in August, weekday, 2025 easy. We missed the gift shop, I am not sure if there really was one. Only one point: taking pictures inside the available buildings is not everywhere allowed. Why not?

We bought tickets at the entrance. It was not very busy, so all in all a nice experience with good relationship price...

Le chateau est joli et c'est un patrimoine très bien entretenu. Par contre il me semble qu'un monument historique, s'il propose des visites, doit présenter correctement son histoire. Le patrimoine a été souillé par la visite guidée. Je ne veux pas accabler le jeune homme qui a fait cette visite comme il pouvait mais le nom de Marguerite de Bourgogne (le château s'appelle "chateau de Marguerite de Bourgogne") n'a pas été cité. On ne nous a pas dit de quand datait le château ni qui l'habitait ni à quoi il servait. Beaucoup de clichés erronés sur le Moyen-Âge voire d'explications fantaisistes. Il y a une grande maison au centre du domaine, nous avons tourné autour, mais nous ne savons pas ce que c'est. Il y a un bateau dans le jardin, nous ne savons pas pourquoi. Grosses erreurs aussi sur les termes d'architecture. Le jardin, vaguement évoqué comme "respectueux de toutes les règles des jardins à la française" ce qui n'est pas du tout le cas... Comme dit plus haut, je ne cherche pas à accabler ce jeune homme. Guider, c'est un métier et il est nécessaire pour cela d'être formé. Le site internet du château se vante de recruter des futurs guides-conférenciers en stage. Pourquoi pas, mais un stagiaire doit impérativement avoir un maître de stage qui l'encadre et le forme. On dira ce qu'on voudra, ce jeune n'a pas été formé. C'est un manque de respect pour lui, pour les nombreux guides-conférenciers de Saône-et-Loire qui cherchent du travail et pour le patrimoine...
