Fascinating démonstration of a "Victorian" solution to allow the Canal to cross a river that suddenly can be overflowing after a heavy downpour, when both River and Canal are on the same levels.

I don't think it still is in operation, but being so sturdily built, almost certainly could be brought into working order again.

You have to know that it exists as it's hidden away maybe 10 minutes along an unmade track which looks like it would end up nowhere.

The idea was to bring into operation gates on either side of the river part to allow the escape of the flood water, by closing the canal in the way locks operate... After the release of the river water, the canal would resume operation.

Les Ouvrages du Libron – Ingenieurskunst am Canal du Midi

Diese historische Wasserbauanlage bei Vias in Südfrankreich war mir vor dem Besuch nicht bekannt – und ich war wirklich positiv überrascht! Die sogenannten „Ouvrages du Libron“ sind eine raffinierte technische Lösung aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, die das gleichzeitige Überqueren von Kanal- und Flusslauf möglich machte – ganz ohne moderne Technik ⚙️⛵🌊

Was ist das Besondere? Der Canal du Midi, der von Toulouse bis zum Mittelmeer führt, kreuzt an dieser Stelle den Libron-Fluss. Das Problem: Der Libron führt bei Starkregen oft Hochwasser mit viel Sediment und Treibgut – gefährlich für den Kanal und die durchfahrenden Boote.

Die Lösung war ein mobiles Aquädukt-System: Bei normalem Wasserstand konnte der Libron unter dem Kanal durchgeleitet werden. Bei Hochwasser schloss man Schleusentore und öffnete spezielle „mobile Brücken“, sodass das Flusswasser seitlich um den Kanal geleitet wurde, während Schiffe trotzdem passieren konnten. Auf Schautafeln sind die drei Hauptphasen dieser Umleitung anschaulich dargestellt 📘🧠

Eindruck heute Die Anlage ist heute nicht mehr aktiv, aber die Schautafeln vor Ort erklären die Funktionsweise sehr anschaulich – mit Skizzen und kurzen Texten auf Französisch, Englisch und Deutsch. Man bekommt einen guten Eindruck davon, wie durchdacht und präzise damals gearbeitet wurde – ganz ohne Elektronik oder moderne Maschinen 👷📏🚤

Was schade ist: Die Anlage ist nicht mehr in Betrieb, also sieht man nur die Struktur, nicht die Funktionsweise in Aktion Einige Tafeln sind leicht verwittert oder rostig
