The museum was very beautiful and well laid out, inexpensive and quite academic, I would say it could do with a few more computer generated recreations, as there are many many drawings and models which are great but perhaps a bit too many. The site is vast and incredible. The walk up to it is through beautiful woods, it's a hike but worth it,there's a free shuttle bus to take you to the top. The site is free and you can take your dog. The restaurant is really why I'm giving a review, this entire place is what a tourist attraction should be like, it's well kept, well designed buildings, well staffed with polite multi language speaking workers, it's inexpensive (without the guided tour) and the food on location which is a recreation of traditional food (fun and different) is tasty, not very expensive, all organic, with details of where the food comes from in the nearing regions, it's well presented and considered and generally lovely. It's not high dinning but that's really not the point, you're eating what gaulish people ate or similar. This place shows how enormous parks and attractions should do business, it's worthwhile drive, it's...
Read moreOne of the ancient Roman capitals, Bibrat is an archaeological site still under recovery/restoration. A well worth visit with a knowledgeable guide that lasts up to 2 hours, and can be booked in advance over the phone. On Monday at 15:30 it's also available in English. A German visit is available on Tuesday but I can't remember the time.
You can also decide to do everything on your own, reading bilingual panels as well as climb up to the top by foot, which frankly I think it's the best choice. It's about a km and half to the highest point and it takes about 20 mins if you're a fast waker. Minibuses are available for lazy people, or when the sun is too hot.
On site there's a restoration point which apparently serves "Roman" style food. I've not eaten there, but the price sounded reasonable. I got hay ice cream though (packed in a nearby monk monastery apparently) that was...
Read moreExcellent Gallo-Roman historical site still under excavation. 2 hour guided tour in French well worth while as guides very knowledgeable and open to questions. Can also visit on your own with descriptive panels on key spots. Definitely recommend bus ride up as 6 km to top. You don't miss the distance when visiting on way back down. Bus down again from gateway to archealogical site or 20 minute walk through the woods (1km) back to car park. Great panorama view from top of mountain when weather good. Be equipped for quick weather change on hill top (cloudy, rain, cold) and for walking on muddy, slippery trails. Modern museum at entrance is very well laid out with interesting descriptions of finds from the site plus explanations of how site was built in French, English and German. Great site for bigger kids already learning about history of Gauls,...
