La Chai au Quai - the Winery on the Quayside.
A lovely name for a beautiful 19th century building, lovingly restored by the Laithwaites company (you know - the people who are always sending you their tempting sales brochures) and in a gorgeous position fronting the glorious river Dordogne, north bank, in the pretty little town of Castillon-la-Bataille.
Phew, that's the adjectives over and done with!
You can book a tour with knowledgeable oenologues, taste different wines, and buy. They tend to specialise in one-offs, or at least small production wines from, er, small producers.
If you cycle or drive (or even walk) along the road from the Monument Talbot you'll go right past the front door. can't miss...
Read moreAfter a visit to Chateau Clariere where we learnt the viticulture processes of making class wines, this was the icing on the cake! Simon showed us the Le Chai Au Quai cellar and the different wine processes they perform there. In the cool of the tasting room, he led us through the tasting of a dozen bottles of wine, red and white, explaining their characteristics related to the growing, fermentation and bottling of each type, along with the appropriate food accompaniment. What a great way to spend an afternoon!
