The Gibraltar blockhouse was taken from the Germans when the Australian 1st Division attacked, took and held Pozières village between 23 and 26 July 1916. This was one of the many battles between 1 July and 19 November of that year known collectively as The Battle of the Somme. During the last week of July 1916 shells fell in their thousands on Australian soldiers in a village they had captured from the Germans. Here the men of the First Australian Division built their memorial in France. They remembered the tenacity with which they had held their ground and the comrades who had perished in the horror of those bombardments.

Today you can still pull the shrapnel out of the ground, which is ofcourse a witness to the heavy...

If you As a Australian and are in France or Belgie you must visit the battlefields of The Somme and surrounds. You just cant believe how many young men died. The cemeteries are everywhere. La bataille de Pozières est une bataille qui, au cours de la bataille de la Somme, dura deux semaines du 23 juillet au 7 août 1916 pour la conquête du village français de Pozières et du plateau sur lequel il se situait. Bien que des divisions britanniques aient été impliquées dans la plupart des phases du combat, Pozières laisse avant tout le souvenir d'une bataille australienne. À la fin des combats, les forces alliées étaient en possession du Nord du plateau et de l'Est du village et en position de menacer l'arrière des fortifications allemandes de Thiepval. Cependant, le coût en vie humaine fut énorme et l'historien officiel australien Charles Bean a pu écrire que « le plateau de Pozières a vu semer le plus de vies australiennes que n'importe quel autre endroit sur terre ».

Monument voor de aussi´s die Pozieres veroverden op 23 augustus 1916. Hier gebouwd omdat op deze plaats de meest versterkte bunker lag die de duitsers bouwden voor de verdediging van Pozieres. Restanten van de bunker onder de bomen aan de overzijde. De bunker was "Gibraltar" genaamd en bestond uit meerdere machinegeweren die zowel zuid als west van Pozieres verdedigden als onderdeel van de loopgravengordel 'Kay'
