Hell-Bourg is one of the most beautiful places in Reunion. It located in the cirque of Salazie; of the three cirques in Reunion, Salazie is in the east and is the 'wet one', it gets more rain than the other two.

Also, slightly off-topic - but was always curious, I assumed Hell-Bourg was so named because it was 'difficult maybe difficult to get to, or because it was hot and humid. Quite the opposite. Hell-Bourg used to be called Bémaho, a Malagasy word for 'good place to settle', but was renamed Hell-Bourg in honor of Admiral de Hell, who was the Governor of the island from 1819 to 1822.

Anyway, back to fish. Trout aren't native to Reunion, and particularly not halfway up a mountain (Hell-Bourg is at 1300m altitude). Trout are, however, popular to eat in France and at some point someone set up a trout farm here.

The trout farm isn't very big but it is a working trout-farm and you can just visit, or - and a lot more fun, you can fish for trout in their fish ponds. Even the world's worst fisherman couldn't fail to succeed here.

I went with our kids, and between us we caught about 20 fish in an hour. Lots of fun and a really enjoyable stop. When you've done you can keep your fish, the lady there will gut and clean them for you, and will give you some ice to keep them fresh on the way home, or back to your hotel.

There is a nice lady who does a great job of explaning the history of the place. The fishing spot seems to be a nice chill activity
