A eclusa de Castanet foi a primeira executada em formato elíptico para quem vem de Toulouse em direcção a Sète. Para a melhor compreensão é relevante citar que Paul Riquet tinha começado a construir eclusas com paredes retas mas depois percebeu que, devido aos constrangimentos mecânicos do terreno envolvente, era preferível construir bacias elípticas.
