We (my partner and I) booked to stay for one evening at Chateau De Rouquefoulet. The place has huge potential but unfortunately our experience was overshadowed by very unwelcoming and unfriendly hosts. Overall, definitely not great value for money.
ARRIVAL AND WELCOME We arrived quite late (11pm, instead of ~7-8pm, by our own fault as we were stuck in a nightmare-ish traffic). We advised the Chateau as such and were pleased that they were responsive and said they'd be there to welcome us. Upon arrival unfortunately, a few problems: 1) google maps still directed people to the wrong location and the Chateau didn't update it, 2) We tried to call anyone at the chateau and no one responded for a solid 45min 3) even when we drove around, we got to a gate with the Chateau's sign, which no one responded to as we buzzed, and which eventually turned out to be the wrong one given there was no sign at all on directions to get there and we had to get in from the back. We were then greeted by a man who was unfriendly and very unwelcoming. He directed us straight to our room, did not say much, and grumpily told us that he was preparing the charterie board which we had agreed with the hotel for dinner. He seemed so angry about it that we told him not to worry about it and skipped dinner altogether.
THE ROOM: The room itself was very nice and spacious. However, there was a few critical things missing / uncompleted. There was no mini-bar despite there being advertised there would be one. There was only 1 small bottle of wine, nothing else, and especially NO WATER at all! We had to go back to the car and take a bottle we had previously bought from a grocery shop (thank god!). In addition, there was a thermostat control on the wall but this was not working, and thus no air con during the very warm days in France.
BREAKFAST AND CHECK-OUT: As we headed to breakfast in the morning, no one welcomed us again. We sat at the obvious place where a few food items were left: A super unfresh fruit salad which became very brown with time, some bread, some ham, butter and some pastries. And some coffee from a Nespresso machine... Think this breakfast was EUR15 to 30 per person which was honestly a joke. Someone came at some point to say hello, but did not say anything beyond that, did not offer to explain anything about the chateau, did not offer for us to look around / have a stroll around the establishment, didn't give an overview of the facilities, nothing at all. As we packed to leave shortly after breakfast (given how unwelcomed we felt), the same lady came and asked us to settle the bill. A very transactional stay, really bad value for money. It felt like we literally paid for somewhere to sleep uncomfortably overnight with no A/C, and after a long drive to get there. For more than EUR350 a night!!! We really did not know how to feel about this, other than super...
