Gagangiri Maharaj, who was revered and worshipped as Emperor Chalukya Pulakeshi, hails from Patankar family. His original personal name is Sripad and he belongs to village Manadure in Patan district of South Maharashtra. At the age of 7 he left his home and He went to Battees-Shirala. This place has a Math (ashram) of Nathsampradaya. This cult (sampradaya) has a wide following all over India and has about 1600 establishments.Sri Gagangiri Maharaj as a youthful sanyasi, also moved about with Mahants (Senior Sages) right up to the Himalayas. During pilgrimages he learnt yoga and several occult and religious practices. He travelled far and wide to places such as Nepal, Bhutan, Manas Sarovar, Gaurishankar, (Gorak assembly), Gorakshdarbar, Gorakhpur, Pashupatinath and returned to Almora. Finally, he travelled through the valley of Ganga, Himachal Pradesh and reached. Near Badrika Ashram there ice-clad mountains, where Gagangiri Maharaj was extremely tired as a result of his peregrinations and he decided to settle in a cave. When he was relaxing, a sage wearing saffron robes came there from the mountains. He sprinkled water from his Kamandalu, on the face of Gagangiri Maharaj. He also gave him some kind of green grass to eat which resembled coriander leaves. For his penance, he had prepared mattresses of grass. He found his mattresses growing like living vegetation. This was considered as an experience, where Tantrik technique is perfected. He did a number of Kaya Kalpas (Rejuvenation). In this process he invented several new concepts in Tantrik techniques and proved them true.He said "You will now attain the state of salvation, and you shall be responsible for the welfare of humanity and you shall go to the South". Accordingly, Maharaj moved from the valley. He experienced a lot of difficulties and arrived at Rhishikesh. Swamiji then decided to move all over India alone on foot and accordingly his journey started. He did penance at a number of places like Mauli Kund, Mauli Kada, Zanzu water, Mausame Kada, Kasarbari, Ginger water, Sat-barkund, Holi Kada, Margaj water, Jungledeo patti, Shirale etc. During monsoon, he stayed in the cave at Garbhagiri, Gagangiri. He did penance in a pond near the river at Sangashi, Vazar, Vesraf, Palsambe, Ramling etc. Later he went to Vijaydurg, in the Konkan area from where he reached Bombay by steamer. During 1945 to 1948, he did Kayakalpa at Angale, near Rajapur in Konkan.

Gangiri Ashram is located in Khopoli, and you can reach the temple either by train or by road. From Khopoli railway station, you can walk to the ashram, or you can hire an auto-rickshaw. A direct ride costs ₹50, or you can share the ride for ₹20 per person. The distance from Khopoli station to the ashram is about 1 km. On the way, you can also enjoy the view of a waterfall. The place is very peaceful and beautiful, and they maintain it very cleanly. Before entering the ashram, you'll find several stalls selling snacks and drinks, such as lemon soda (₹60 for two), momos, onion bhaji, vada pav, and more. Upon entering the ashram, you'll need to remove your shoes and take a coupon, which is free of charge. However, there is no luggage or locker room to store your bags, and you must visit the entire place without shoes. It was a great experience for me, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it too. The washrooms are very clean and well-maintained. There is also a foot-cleaning area, and drinking water is available at multiple spots throughout the ashram. After exploring the ashram, you can visit the 9 Grah statues, and then proceed to the Prati Kedarnath Temple, which is a replica of the original Kedarnath temple. You can also walk to the Guffa (cave) in about 15-20 minutes. The place is very peaceful, but be careful as we saw some ghorpads (lizards) along the way. There is also a stay option available for ₹500 per person for 24 hours, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner—it's a good deal. Please note that you can visit the Guffa only until 5 pm; after that, entry is not allowed. Overall, it’s a must-visit place—quiet, beautiful, and serene.Shring some glimpse hope you liked it

I went there with a nostalgic memory of my childhood when I had the God's grace to have Swami Ji's darshan (1990s), but the entire nostalgia got lost when I saw the ashram this time. I wanted my children to have a serene experience but the entire hope went for a toss the minute we entered.. the security guard made hurried gestures to get inside. The moment we tried to enter 3-4 people came yelling at us to ask to remove shoes. The shoe stand was on the opposite side and the guard had asked us to get in. Not just this instance, we were schooled and yelled for every action of ours. E.g. there was a green path that was laid in the darshan hall. So if children do. Not following that path they shall be yelled again. We did not take the mahaprasad but I saw the way they treated people who had the prasad. There was queue that stood for 2 hours for their turn to take the prasad. So after having the meal they expect the plates to be cleaned by the bhaktas. There was this one mother and child duo. The mother cleaned her plate and left the washbasin as it was a crowded day when she couldn't find her child in the mob. The child who was around 7 years old was left behind. He informed the staff member that he doesn't know to clean the plate. When asked he informed that the mother is not to be seen nearby. He was again scolded and made to clean the plate. While the child was cleaning ,it was shouted for not knowing the cleaning steps. Common it's a child!! If one wants the child to clean the plate it could be done with love and warm words.. All in all. No polite gestures or words. Very snooty security and staff members. I just have one feedback - be kind.
