The Dömitz Fortress is a bastion fort in Dömitz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It was built by John Albert I, Duke of Mecklenburg-Güstrow, between 1559 and 1565, to secure Mecklenburg's border. The fort saw use during the Thirty Years' War and the Napoleonic Wars, and it was decommissioned in 1894.

Very interesting place to visit. Unfortuntelyn while all the warning signs are in 3 languages all the information is not. You need to read German to get the most out of your visit. Do not let that put you off from visiting. Your entrance fee goes to support valuable restoration work. Parking nearby is free and its a great place for a picnic or to go hiking. The town is very quaint and pretty. Worth seeing. Nearby is a fragment of the border fence from the DDR and the castle has an exhibition of the day the people of East Germany became free to travel to the West.

I am happy to do our project week at Fortress Dömitz where we spent four days of land survey and laser scanning.Happy to be in a place with lots of history and serene landscape.Once acted as the gateway to Mecklenburg state, they have witnessed revolutions and world wars. Located by the Elbe river, definitely worth the visit with a curious mind to have a look around ,and spend the weekend biking etc.

Eine kaum bekannte, historische Sehenswürdigkeit, die in Norddeutschland einmalig ist. Es gibt keine andere, erhaltene Festung aus dieser Zeit. Traurig, dass Bund und Land MV hier nicht investieren - trotz der Bedeutung dieser Sehenswürdigkeit! Gemeinde und Verein können eine Anlage dieser Größenordnung nicht erhalten. Eintritt ist überall frei, Spenden sind gern gesehen. Hauptgebäude aufgrund Bauffälligkeit nicht mehr zugänglich, das trifft auch auf einige Kasematten zu. Alles in allem eine beeindruckende Festung, mit schöner Ausstellung. Interessante Informationen zu Fritz Reuters Gefängnissjahren. Empfehlenswert ein Rundgang außen um die Festung. Man spürt die Geschichte dieser Verteidigungsanlage!

Wir waren zur Irish-Folk-Night in der Festung. Die Musiker haben einen perfekten Job gemacht. Zum Ende hin wurde es allerdings ungemütlich, weil die Stühle noch während die Musik spielte eingesammelt und gestapelt wurden. Nicht nachzuvollziehen ist, warum die perfekte überdachte Bühne von der Band nicht genutzt wurde. Dann hätten alle Besucher einen perfekten Blick gehabt. Ich denke bei einem Eintrittspreis von 30,00 € kann man vom Veranstalter einiges verlangen. Übrigens muss ein Plastikbecher Bier nicht 5,00 € kosten. 😕

Die Festungsanlage ist noch sehr gut erhalten. Der Eintritt ist kostenlos, es wird um eine kleine Zuwendung zum Erhalt der Anlage gebeten. Man kann dort viele interessante Gebäudeteile erkunden und von der Wehranlage hat man einen sehr schönen Blick auf die Elbe oder auf den Ort selber. Wenn man außerhalb der Festung in Richtung Elbe geht, bekommt man auch interessante Informationen zur ehemaligen Grenze zwischen Ost und West. In jedem Fall ist die Festung und Umgebung einen Besuch wert.

Zur Zeit (Anfang März) noch etwas trist, leider ist das Fritz Reuter Haus geschlossen. Ich musste erst ein wenig über den Eintrittspreis von 5,50 € schlucken, aber im Endeffekt ist das ein okayer Preis. Man kann dafür in den Innenhof und die entsprechenden Gebäude, welche jedes für sich eine eigene Ausstellung enthalten. Einiges zu Umwelt und Natur, teils schön modern und interaktiv, teils historische Ausstellungen zu Geschichte der Festung und Fritz Reuter.
