Came here with my three kids ages 6, 4, and 2 years, on a Friday afternoon with a group of other adults with their children, some of whom had been here before (I had not). I was the first to arrive and wasn't exactly sure where I should have parked, but ended up deciding to park at Parkplatz Oberhammer, which can fit about 10 cars but only had a few left at 2pm this Friday afternoon in July. We followed the stairs down to what may be the "start" of this gorge, and at the base of the stairs there were a few neat things to see - a waterfall with a bridge going over it, a stone monument, and a rock table, on which we had a picnic while we waited for our friends to arrive. Once they did, we set out - the younger children were worn in baby carriers and the older children walked; The flat, likely stroller-friendly path wound over and along the side of the stream, and there were many places the kids would play in the water or find rocks to jump to and from. There were also lots of things in the surrounding woods they would stray off the path to look at, most of the time being safely within sight. Our walk culminated at the gazebo (which located near where the "Karlstalschult" pin is), and we spent some time picnicking and climbing rocks and enjoying the calm (or as calm as can be with that many kids and other people hiking through), beautiful atmosphere. Truly, it is a beautiful trail even though it is basically just a walking path along a stream in the woods. A friend said she had come to this gazebo from a different parking lot that was much closer to this side of the park (I'm guessing Parkplatz Klug'sche Mühle), but personally I think that the walk along the stream made the day that much better. We turned aroudn at that point and went back to the car. I believe it took us about 1.5-2 hours between the picncking, VERY slow walking, many delays while playing in or alongside the stream. I'm sure it could be done in 30 minutes or less if you are an adult just walking along at a normal pace without stopping, but it certainly can be made into an afternoon. Bring food and water, as I saw nowhere to get either of those things, nor did I see any bathroom facilities. Most of the path was well shaded, but I would recommend good shoes as it could be slippery with leaves and dirt, or if you have to go in the water to...
Read moreKarlstal is a fantastic hiking spot, especially if you have a dog. The trail is not far from Kaiserslautern, so it’s really easy to get to, and it feels like a peaceful escape into nature. The path follows a beautiful little creek that makes the whole walk refreshing and scenic. It’s not too difficult, which makes it perfect for a relaxed outing while still getting that “deep in the forest” feeling. My dog absolutely loved it — plenty of space to explore, fresh air, and water nearby. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a relaxing hike with their pup close...
