I had no idea what a tourist destination this place is! Came today on an overcast, slightly warm August 2022 Saturday afternoon. We drove - we took the ferry from Bingen over the river then into Rudesheim, then entered the area laden with vineyards, first going to see the Ehrenfels ruin, then taking vineyard roads to the Rudesheim Berg Parkplatz. Unfortunately, Google took us through paths that (though paved and wide enough for cars) were heavily used pedestrian paths, but nevertheless we made our way to the parking lot, which is a very large, well-developed paid lot. From there, we could see the station for the cable car, though I'm not sure where this comes from (even a quick Google search couldn't find that info for me), but I know it covers 2km. Anyways, the path pulls you toward the temple gazebo, which is overlooked by a restaurant with a large shaded patio (and delicious food, by the way). We then walked to the monument itself which is MASSIVE, and quite crowded on this August weekend afternoon, not to mention very sunny (even on this overcast day it felt sunny). We stayed there for about 10 minutes looking at the monument and its spectular views before going to the restaurant, where we ate and had wine before going to the Johannisberg castle winery. There were many informational signs near the monument explaining its different components, though with small children it was hard for me to take the time to read it. There was also a kiosk behind the monument with souvenirs. The path to and from the parking lot and cable car has a few shaded grassy areas that would be great places for a picnic blanket and a rest. There were many benches at the monument itself, plus the base of the monument has a step-wise design that kids love to play on and sit. There were many trails in the area that would be lovely to explore, especially among the many vineyards surrounding the monument. There were several coin machines that would flatten and imprint a coin, but we didn't find any actual medallion souvenir coins. Overall, this was a must-see for us, as it is quite significant in German history and very impressive, though I'd recommend going on a weekday to...
Read moreMagnificent view of winding Rhine river and endless vineyards on the opposite side in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Parking is located directly by the viewing place and every time we visited, free spots were available to park our car. However the parking fee is ridiculous! Charges 4 EUR per day even if visited for a short period of time.
There is a possibility to reach Niederwald by cableway from Rüdesheim but we have never tried it.
Right next to the parking lot there is a small restaurant / café offering basic snacks and drinks. Toilets were nice and clean.
There are actually two viewing places to visit - Niederwald Temple and Niederwald Monument. The firstly named offers views of Rüdesheim and Rhine river all the way up to Mainz. Niederwald Monument, located two minutes away, overlooks the city of Bingen and Rhine Valley. Both views are absolutely stunning and one of the best in the region!
The Niederwald Monument, commemorating the Unification of Germany is a large and impressive statue surrounded by meticulously maintained grass and lavender fields, which were unfortunately not yet in bloom during our last visit. Information boards were located near the base of the statue, available both in German and English, to learn something about the historical significance of the place.
Stairs and platforms under the statue offer a great place to sit, relax and simply enjoy the atmosphere. A small souvenir shop selling postcards and magnets is located right behind the statue.
This is a regular stop on our itinerary when friends or family comes to visit! Last visited...
