Amazing lake, cristal clear and beautiful view The catchment area of the lake extends over 38 km², with an average depth of 29.60 m and a maximum of 51 m, it has a water volume of 16,855,000 m³. With a length of 1.32 km, a width of 0.42 km and a circumference of 3.5 km, it covers a water surface of 57 hectares. Its water level is 613.1 m above sea level. NHN.
It is separated from Königssee, a little to the north, by a moraine wall, which is estimated to be 700 m long, 800 m wide and 320 m high. The rubble of a landslide in 1172 is still visible today in the form of massive blocks in the alluvial forest of the valley floor and the floodplains of the Saletalm.
On the south bank at an altitude of 620 m is the 500-year-old Fischunkelalm, which is managed by two milkmaids from mid-May to mid-October.
On the long sides of the island-less lake, 1000 m high cliffs tower up, while the terrain on the southern shore rises gently. From the 470 m high Röthwand rising behind it, the Röthbachfall[3] falls down onto the Almboden, and from the chest wall to the north, the Landtalgraben. The streams unite and seep away in the Fischunkel, the rearmost part of the valley, and flow underground to the Obersee.
The Obersee feeds the Königssee, which is called Saletbach, via a 600 m long torrent. Halfway to Königssee, the stream widens south to the small Mittersee. This is around 110 m long and 60 m wide, with a size of only 0.44 ha. The water level is at an altitude of 608 m above sea level. NHN.
The Obersee has not been fished since the Berchtesgaden National Park was created on August 1, 1978. Today there are numerous species of fish in the Obersee, most notably the lake char...
Read moreThe journey typically starts with a boat trip on Königssee, which is an adventure in itself. Boats depart from the village of Schönau am Königssee and travel to Salet, the final stop on the lake. From Salet, a well-marked hiking trail leads to Obersee. This 1.5km hike (30 minutes) is relatively easy and suitable for families and casual hikers.
At the far end of Obersee, you will find the Fischunkelalm, a traditional alpine pasture hut. It’s a great spot to rest, enjoy a snack, and take in the surrounding views. During the summer months, you can purchase fresh dairy products from the hut.
From Obersee, a short and slightly more challenging hike leads to Röthbach Waterfall, Germany's highest waterfall. The waterfall plunges about 470 meters down a cliff, creating a stunning sight, especially after heavy rains or...
Read moreThis is such a beautiful little lake that you can easily visit from the the southern most stop for those taking boat rides across Konigsee. From Salet, the last stop, it is a 15 minute walk to the southeast until you reach Obersee. Just follow the trail and most other tourists who will be going there.
