Gäubodenmuseum — Attraction in Straubing

An absolute jewel of a museum. The designers of the new layout are to be congratulated on creating exhibition spaces that are well lit, spacious, and yet absolutely fill of very well displayed items. The gallery of Roman objects, particularly the cavalry sports equipment, with its bronze chamfrons, helmet masks etc is impressive and informative but it is the early mediaeval gallery, the "Bavaria rises" gallery which is the most striking. Great black cases, like glass topped sarcophagi, contain the remains of individuals from the local Bajuwaren cemeteries, with the riches with which they were buried. The cases are high enough that young children cannot see in to them without assistance, something which is, I suspect deliberate given the human remains within. The quality and craftsmanship of the grave goods on display is remarkable as one expects from cemeteries of the 6th/7th centuries but other items also impress, notably the small woodworkers plane which looks as though it could still be used. Overall, another excellent German museum and one which should serve as an example to British museums when they look to refresh...

I went in October of 2021. Straubing is seemed pretty cool but I didn't stay long. I was on a mission to see this museum. It did not disappoint! The Roman stuff just blew me away. It was well worth my day trip. Don't forget to go to the Amt für Tourismus Straubing which is right around the corner from the museum. Wen die Entwicklungsgeschichte des Menschen, vorallem im Raum Straubing, interessiert, erfährt hier viel über Siedlungsweisen, Handwerk, Bestattungsriten. Ich war vor einigen Jahren schon einmal dort und ich dachte, dass das Museum so ein typisches, leicht angestaubtes und in die Jahre gekommenes Museum sei. Grundsätzlich finde ich es faszinierend, was alles von diesen Ausstellungsstücken im Raum Straubing, Cham, meistens durch Zufall gefunden, manchmal auch unwissend zerstört wurde. Inzwischen wurden einige Präsentationen "modernisiert ", mit Erklärungen über Kopfhörer bereichert, einige Bespiele können angefasst werden, und mit Licht und Farben wurde Stimmung gemacht. Kurze, erklärende Videos, modern und unterhaltsam, runden das Ganze ab. Mir persönlich gefällt es sehr gut. Schön wäre es, wenn mit diesen Neuerungen weitergemacht wird. Leider reichte meine Zeit nicht aus, die Ausstellung über den Römerschatz und Sakrale......irgendwas anzusehen. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, glaube aber, dass auch zeitlich begrenzte Ausstellungen dargeboten werden. Auf alle Fälle werde ich nach einiger Zeit wieder mal...
