It's a small castle, but a true gem within an otherwise not really beautiful city. The village of Fallersleben was integrated into the city of Wolfsburg in 1972. To me, it was that old village core with all the half timber houses and the park with the little pond by the church that all surround the castle what made the entire magical picture.
The inside of the castle is now a wedding destination for one, but mostly dedicated to Hoffmann von Fallersleben, who lived opposite of it in what is now a restaurant and hotel called Hoffmannshaus. Originally the little palace was constructed from 1550 to 51 as the Dowager's residence of Clara von Sachsen-Lauenburg, Duchess of Braunschweig-Gifhorn. A statue of her outside the castle was placed in her memory.
I already really enjoyed the place, but there was a cherry on top. In the castle two members of staff were present, a lady and a gentleman, and both were absolute delights. Very friendly and visibly enjoying to share their knowledge of the history as well as the structure of the place. I even got a sneak peak into Clara's church, St. Michaelis. Besonders spannend fand ich die beiden Museen im Schloss: Das Hoffmann-von-Fallersleben-Museum, das dem berühmten Dichter des "Deutschlandliedes" gewidmet ist, und das Freimaurer-Museum, das tiefere Einblicke in diese mysteriöse Bruderschaft bietet.
Beide Ausstellungen sind gut gestaltet und informativ. Herzogin Klara von Braunschweig und Lüneburg erhielt das Schloss als Witwensitz und vollendete den Bau im Jahr 1551. Später wandelte es sich in einen Amtssitz. Heute ist im Schloss ein kleines Museum zum Schriftsteller August Heinrich Hoffmann, bekannt als Hoffmann von Fallersleben, untergebracht.
