When I heard there was a zoo in Accra, I knew I had to add it to my list as a travel writer!
Upon arrival, you will see a green booth where you will purchase your tickets (C20 for foreigners and C10 for Ghanaians) but if you are not coming with your own transportation do not let your driver leave! Keep your ride going.
The actual zoo entrance is a bit far from where you buy your tickets and you will need a ride there unless you are willing to walk for about 20-40 minutes. It even took quite a while by car.
Our guide seemed less than enthusiastic about having to show us around. There are more animals than I thought but they are hard to see through the very small fences (concerning for the animals). Some of the animals also did not look to be in the best condition.
Overall, my visit to the zoo was very underwhelming and I would not go again! I love new experiences so I would not say it was a waste of time, but not a great tourism point.
My full review of the zoo can be found on my blog with more pictures!

Read moreLooking for a fun, super affordable way to spend an hour or 2 with kids; I would recommend the Accra zoo.
Itâs about 2gh for kids and 5ghc for adults I believe. I know for sure it wasnât anything above 10gh. The tour takes about an hour
Please take note; the actual zoo is far from the entrance gate, if you happen to go with an uber, donât let them leave you at that first gate. I learnt this the hard way (cries at the memory)
Now to the zoo! Please manage your expectation. Itâs a small research zoo. It has about 15 or more animals. All I know is almost half the cast of lion king was there đ¤Ł
There are lions, crocodiles, turtles, deers, antelopes, monkeys, birds, ducks, ostrich, crazy looking bird I forgot itâs name, snakes, porcupine, hedgehog, hyenas, did I mention snakes? Lol
The guides are nice and adequately informed!
Go, relax, hold a snake, get chased by a lion and come back home with Facebook pictures (I dunno why but it doesnât feel like Instagram pictures, feels like the kind you post of fb đ)
As always I have a video on my YouTube! Search âakosua...

There are not many sign posts, so will you just keep walking straight until you meet the zoo. On arrival, you will be welcomed by the geese which roam about on the compound. The zoo has about 5 species of monkeys, an ostrich, an emu, a crocodile, a donkey, common warthogs, jackals, rabbits, tortoises, duikers, antelopes, deer, hyenas, lions, the African python, the Royal python, pocket-size turtles and different species of birds (the African grey parrot, the Senegalese parrot, cockatoo, parakeets, macaw, peacocks, pheasant bird, crane bird, doves etc). The guide may suggest that you handle the virtually harmless Royal python, and you can hang it around your neck if you're not afraid. There is a hide and skull of a zebra, skin of an African python and massive bones of the African elephant. The guide was knowledgeable and patient and readily answered...
