Kakum National Park, nestled in Ghana's Central Region, is an absolute must-visit for anyone seeking a blend of adventure and natural immersion. My experience there was nothing short of exhilarating, primarily thanks to its iconic Canopy Walkway. This isn't just any walk; it's a series of seven suspended bridges, stretching a staggering 350 meters and soaring up to 40 meters (130 feet) above the rainforest floor. The feeling of being suspended so high, with the dense canopy unfolding beneath and around you, is truly unique. While it might give those with a fear of heights a moment of pause, the sturdy construction with wire ropes, aluminum ladders, and safety netting instills confidence, and the views are simply unparalleled. You get a "bird's-eye view" of the rainforest ecosystem, a perspective rarely afforded. Beyond the thrills of the canopy walk, Kakum offers much more. We opted for a guided nature walk on the forest floor, which provided a completely different, yet equally fascinating, experience. Our knowledgeable guide pointed out various medicinal plants, shared insights into the forest's ecology, and even recounted local folklore. While spotting large mammals like elephants or bongos can be challenging from the canopy (they're often elusive in such a dense forest), the guided walk allowed us to observe a plethora of insects, vibrant butterflies (over 600 species recorded!), and a wide array of birdlife. Kakum is, in fact, a premier site for birdwatchers, with over 300 species, including some of global conservation concern. The park's commitment to conservation is evident, and the guides provide valuable information about the region's rich biodiversity and the efforts to protect it. There are also facilities like a visitor center, restaurant, and even options for overnight camping in treehouses for those who wish to extend their rainforest adventure. Kakum National Park is more than just a tourist attraction; it's an opportunity to connect deeply with nature and appreciate the incredible biodiversity of Ghana's rainforests. Whether you're an adventure seeker, a nature enthusiast, or simply looking for a memorable experience, Kakum delivers. It's a testament to Ghana's natural heritage and well worth...

We really enjoyed our time here. Of course we did the walk way! I thought it was really cool to see the forest from the treetops. It felt safe and was well done in terms of experience. It give a perspective that you can’t get from the forest floor. The hike to the beginning of the walk way is steep and some people felt it was challenging but if you’re in decent shape it’s not hard. It is hot though so definitely bring (or buy) water. I highly recommend a bag or backpack so you have your hands free while on the walk way. My bag was too small for my water bottle and I wished I didn’t have to have it in my hands. If you have a fear of heights, this is probably not the activity for you. We also did a hike in the forest floor which I quite enjoyed in comparison to being in the canopy. Our guide was great, a local guy who’s been doing tours for 7 years. We read terrible review for the restaurant so we didn’t plan on eating there but we watched people get their food in a decent amount of time. We had ice cream and beers and that was a nice treat. Parking is 5 cedis and then the canopy and hike had a fee, non Ghanians are quite a bit more. We were staying in Elmina and the drive was pretty easy, road is in decent condition and there were no police checkpoints. We made it in less than an hour. I know people do it but coming from Accra would take so long. It’s not far in distance but travel time is very slow in Ghana. I highly recommend traveling to cape coast or Elmina and then going to Kakum.
