• The National Park of Nestos Delta and lakes was founded in 2008 and is the largest national park of Greece. • It covers an area of 230 acres of gorges, lagoons & floodplain forests, home to tortoises, flamingos & pelicans. It is one of the most important wetlands in the country and in Europe, due to the extent and variety of its habitats. The protected areas of Nestos Delta, Lake Vistonida, Lake Ismarida wetlands and their surrounding area are now included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance The white pelicans arrive in winter, together with large flocks of greater flamingos. In the area live many rare species, such as short-eared owls, red-breasted mergansers, pomarine skuas, pygmy cormorants, bitterns, white-headed ducks, tufted ducks, ferruginous ducks, collared pratincoles, oystercatchers, stone-curlews, lapwings and bluethroats. Read moreNestos National Park is a very large area, with some not so easy to acces sections. However, there is plenty to see there and I highly recommend people to visit this place. While in Keramoti, I went to the Nestos Delta Information Center and a nice employee explained a lot of things about the area and it's more than 20 sections. For an easy acces, I would suggest the Nestos Adventure Park (Galani) - you can leave your car there, enjoy a splendid, efortless riverside trail or deep your feet in the refreshing Nestos River. Some people had their swimming suit with them and went for a swim, others came prepared for a picnic. Read moreWe had a lovely private tour with one of the local guides, that took us to see amazing lagunas with rare birds, beautiful spots in the forest along the river, explained and answered all our questions. We stopped along the way, in different places and the lady tour guide took out binoculars and telescopes and we could admire the birds from up close.
