Visiting the Holy Monastery of the Virgin Mary on Amorgos is an experience that blends breathtaking natural beauty with profound spiritual history. It is absolutely a must-see for anyone coming to the island.
To reach the monastery, prepare for a stunning 15-minute climb up carved stone steps, with panoramic views of the Aegean Sea that are nothing short of spectacular. The path is steep, but the reward is immense—perched dramatically on a cliffside, the monastery itself is awe-inspiring.
Note: Modest dress is required. Men must wear pants and women a long skirt. If you arrive unprepared, don’t worry—respectful attire is provided at the entrance.
Once inside, you’ll first visit the intimate and sacred church area, where you may meet one of the two remaining monks. The peaceful energy and silence here are moving. Afterward, guests are welcomed into the reception room for a taste of traditional hospitality: a local sweet (similar to a soft marshmallow) and a glass of their homemade port wine. It’s a simple yet touching gesture that speaks volumes about the warmth of the place.
The monastery has a rich and remarkable history, including its founding by monks fleeing persecution in Palestine. According to tradition, a miraculous event led them to settle here and dedicate the church to the Virgin Mary. Be sure to ask about the full story—it’s both inspiring and deeply rooted in faith and resilience.
Whether you come for the views, the history, or the spiritual reverence, this monastery is truly unforgettable. Don’t leave Amorgos...
Read moreIt's an impressive building BUT it's best if you admire it from afar, maybe the bottom of the cliff. I usually visit small chapels while on islands as they can be very interesting. I do not visit them for religious reasons thought. The many, many stone steps leading to the top are very slippery and unless you go before 9 am the sun is too harsh. By the time you arrive you are tired. It's usually crowded in the summer as it doesn't stay open for too long. If you are a woman you need to wear a long skirt and have your shoulders covered. Imagine having to do that while sweating from climbing the staircase. If you wear pants (long, short doesn't matter) they will hand you a dirty scarf to wrap around your pants. The interior is nothing special, the iconography as well is not impressive or important. Yes, the view of the Aegean is beautiful but you can have the same view from the top of the road. The people who welcome you are a bit rude. It's not an easy climb for mothers/parents with babies. In general, some things are better seen...
Read morePossibly the most spectacular monastery in the Cyclades if not Greece. Perched on a precarious cliff face with stunning views of the ocean, the choice of location surely begs the observer to question "why here?". Then again why not. Who wouldn't live a life in complete gratitude in such a location? And I am truely grateful to have seen this place. A steep climb is richly rewarded every step of the journey with incredible photo opportunities along the way. A moderate level of fitness and appropriate footwear would help with the climb. Some clothing is provided for those not properly attired for entry into the monastery though this is limited and would perhaps run out in peak times. Photography is not allowed in the monastery but is from some of the viewpoints outdoors on patios. There is a store for water and refreshments at the beginning of the climb in a small carpark. We attended early and we're fortunate to beat the crowds which grew significantly whilst...
