A lovely little outing, 30 min drive from Heraklion. All in all, it took us up to an hour to walk down to the lake, try the paths around it, take pictures and come back. Don't trust Google maps when it tells you to drive down a steep goat trail from the nearest village. We fell for the trap and I held my breath all the way down, as the car was being scratched by the overgrowth and bouncing on the super steep rocky path. We took a better road on the way back. Once you reached the sign for the Fairy Cave by a dilapidated toilet hut, you can park there. Walk down past the grapevine orchard, then olive and fig trees. There will be a little path on your right going down ( there was just a flip flop for a sign), take it. The lake is very serene and atmospheric. The place is shady. You can cross the lake over the concrete platform and take few more steps up the path on the other side to...
Read moreA family adventure out. We parked at the top by the so called toilet. Walked down and found the signage to be useful. A bit steep in parts but once we got to the bottom it was lovely and cool. There is Fairy cave on the way down that looks tempting to walk in but we we didn’t go in far. Not busy, only one other couple looking around but Covid-19 time. Found the ladies in the rocks and my husband and son walked up the other side to see the different view. Very jungle like and cicadas were making it authentic. The water didn’t look suitable for a dip. But it was cool enough in the shade. My teenage children seemed to enjoy it and I’m sure younger would also. A nice day out if...
Read moreThis nature haven is truly a breath of fresh air. Accessing it is a breeze, requiring just a brief, manageable stroll over a series of steps and paths from the nearest point of car access. Keep in mind, though, that the area lacks designated parking and is saddled with notably narrow roads. Should you opt to park further out, adjacent to the cabin signpost, prepare for a substantially longer walk. As depicted in the photos, the area is lush with greenery. If you're a nature enthusiast visiting the region, this spot is sure to please. But is it worth the journey from, let's say, Heracleion? Unless you've ventured to Crete solely for this natural wonder, I'd...
