Just attempted to make this trip today unfortunately we were unable to. We travelled from heraklion city centre in a Toyota aygo. Up until the last 5 minutes, I would say was perfectly fine. The last 5 minutes of the dirt road was difficult to get down. We managed, We looked around and realised the way that Google maps took us would be a very long hike over a mountain so we decided to go back up the road and find the other route, we did get some beautiful pictures but thought we taken a wrong route compared to other people's experiences. However, the would not go back up the dirt road. We tried moving the rocks to different positions, but this did not work. We were lucky enough to see a local couple who kindly tried to help us but in the end we called our car rental who then arranged a tow truck for us. I cannot thank them enough for pulling the car out safely. We waited a couple hours but it was a lovely view and just enough shade not to be burnt to a crisp. The local couple expressed that a few years ago this would have been doable but due to the weather last year the road is wavering away and not stable or safe.

If your driving a small car just don't go down the dirt roads. Park somewhere at the top with minimal rubble Hindsight is a beautiful thing. Just be extra careful, we already saved another couple from making the same mistake we did. Make sure to type in Agiofaraggo Canyon Parking and not just agiofaraggo beach. That was mistake number one. To avoid any dirt roads, looking at google maps you can park by Tholotos Tafos and it says it is a 40 minute walk. We ended up having a lovely day after this was sorted, but for a time, it was really...

Two questions everyone wants to know the answer to: 1. Can you drive there in a little white Nissan/Fiat hire care? 2. Is it worth it? So, to answer the first question. Yes, you can! Go in with the expectation that this will be the worst road you've ever driven on and make friends with your first gear. Good friends. Go slow. No hero stuff. It's half an hour of hell, but doable. You might be wondering if it's worse than Balos, if you've been there. Yes, the road is worse than the Balos road. Now, the second question: is it worth it? After a road like that, it had better be worth it, eh? So, you arrive at the car park and, as if sent by God and the Holy Angels themselves, there's a snack bar. I recommend stopping there for a cold one to calm your post-drive nerves. Then you've got a 20-minute walk through a very picturesque gorge, complete with hermit caves and chapel (featuring a kind notice requesting people not to walk around naked in this area). You get to the beach and you'll discover that a) it's not the greatest beach you've ever been on, it's a bit gravely and stoney, hard to pitch your parasol without it blowing away and b) a bunch of Germans (no, I'm not following stereotype; they were speaking German) either can't read or just don't care and are letting it all hang out. If you can ignore the slight beach discomfort and the sight of krautschwantz then you're left with a dramatic and beautiful location for a swim. Is it worth it?...

Beautiful beach and beautiful place. Crystal clear water and clean sandy beach. The scenery is amazing and beautiful especially the small "hiking" to get there (Very easy for all ages and small 15+20 minute or 1.5k kilometres without any form of climbing). This place has a dedicated parking area (it is free of charge until now) . This beach isn't organised so you must bring with you some sort of shade especially the crowded season/days because despite the fact that the beach is surrounded with rocky mountains that they provide some sort of shade obviously it isn't enough for everyone. Also you must have at least enough water with you because the nearest place to buy some is about 1.5 kilometres or 15-20 minutes away on foot and it is located in the parking area. I don't know if nudity is acceptable there but when i visited there was some but who am i to judge. This place despite some rare illegal camping it has been kept extremely clean so i hope it will stay the same so please take all your trash with you leaving. You must know that to get there you have to drive about 5 kilometres (the last 5) of unpaved road that it is slow and narrow BUT it is not dangerous and it can be accessed with almost any car if you drive very slow and very careful. I would suggest an suv for peace of...

There are two ways to go to the beach of Agiofarago one is by boat from nearby ports (Matala, Agia Galini, Kokkinos Pirgos) and the second is by cross the gorge, by easy hiking of about 25 - 35 minutes. The road until the parking is bad (dirt track), try to follow the signs or other cars not GPS! We chose to cross the gorge and the route was really beautiful within the vertical rocks of the gorge. On the way you will see the chapel of St. Antony built on 14th century. If you choose to cross the gorge go early in morning because the sun is very strong. The beach at the exit of the gorge is very beautiful with small pebbles and clear blue water. On the left of the beach is a rocky arch that you can swim beneath and on the right is a big rock in the sea that you can jump from! Vertical cliffs surround the beach. You will meet free wild goats climbing on cliffs and walking on beach that is very rare to see somewhere else.
