Topolia Gorge — Attraction in Municipality of Kissamos

One star is unfair, but it's important to flag the issues with visiting this gorge.

In 2019 most of the path was washed away. As of 2022, it is still hard to traverse. You will need to ford the stream several times (easy if you can get your feet wet). You will have to climb some boulders. It's beautiful, but unless you're a really serious hiker probably you can only walk for an hour.

We hiked the gorge end of March and the water level was low enough to be able to cross the river multiple times. It was quite an adventure for my 13 year old as we needed to look for a feasible path and he preferred to hop the stones next/in the river instead of using the "lame" path alongside. Wondermooi Kreta! Natuur in volle pracht! Maar meer moet je daar niet achter zoeken. Wij bezochten Topolia Gorge onderweg met de auto naar een andere locaties. Meer dan een stop onderweg is het niet geweest maar toch moet je dit gezien hebben! Onze route: Vanuit omgeving Rethymon: TOPOLIA - AGIA SOPHIA (grot) - CHRISOSKALITASSA klooster - ELAFONISI.

In Topolia zelf kan je 3 Byzantijnse kerken bezoeken: Agios Joannis, Agia Paraskevi en Tinios Stavros. Net achter het dorp moet je door een tunnel. Daar begint de kloof. Echter vlak voor die tunnel kan je even parkeren van de weg af om al een blik op de kloof te werpen. Deze is indrukwekkend met rijke vegetatie en vele grotten. Onder meer de AGIA SOPHIA grot welke je gratis kan bezoeken. Je komt ze vanzelf tegen op de weg. Staat goed aangegeven. In eerdere tijden was dit een bedevaartsoord, nu zou deze grot van groot wetenschappelijk belang zijn. Meteen naast de ingang is een kapel met dezelfde naam. Een taverne om de dorstige te laven...
