There are some places on this Earth that have a special energy or Ch'i or vibration or atmosphere. In my life and travels I have been lucky enough to visit a few of these places. Asklepieion Kos is definitely one of them. It is located in the hills above Kos harbor. I cycled it and although not too difficult I was glad that I'm reasonably healthy. I would recommend to drive if you are not or have children. There is a small kiosk which sells refreshments at an above average price but not extreme. After my cycle I was very glad of it. There is an enterence fee of 6 euro per adult, a family ticket and EU students had free or discounted admittence don't remember the price. On arrival the three tiered site lies ahead. Straight away I was taken by the size of the site. I took my time exploring and it was 45 mins before I reached the top teir. Once there I walked around and found a beautiful spot to sit and mediate in the shade. It is extremely hot so remember to hydrate and protect yourself from the sun. I must have stayed for 3 hours just obsevering the atmosphere and the view. The ancients really knew how and where to build sites. There was no rush to leave and not as many tourists as expected. I could close my eyes and imagine that over 2000 years ago it was a bustling temple complex and a hive of human activity and knowledge. Hidden in the corner of the site behind the early Christian church there is a museum of sorts which houses stone tablets and is air...

Nice place but stuff approach are scandalous! We hv arrived there at end of September about 17:40lt. According to websites place should be open till 20:00 (summer season). First dissapointment - it was open till 19:00 with last enterance at 18:30. We still have more than 1hour of daylight and decided to go but here comes the problems. Stuff so strongly discourage us to enter than we dont know whats going on... first they told us we need at least 1.5hour to visit(lie-1h is enough), then there is dark already(it wasnt), then they starting to tell us about vasps attacking visitors at evening etc. We were so confused that we decide to come another day. Next day we were pis###ed off because we have read that day before was last day of European Heritage Days event and all enterances were for FREE and lazy stuff wsnt us to go because they want to leave earlier... They either forget to mentioned lack of payment... also monday opening comes with problems. We arrived as early birds at 8:10 . The place should be open from 10min already but it wasnt! We need to wait half more hour to enter. BTW Quality of infrastructure is awfull. Toillets were dirty and the stuff just starting to clean these. Discriptions number are very limited, some artefacts seems to be missing. Definitelly place is very important historically but the visit isnt worth 8 euro fee per head. Not with this...

Asclepius is the hero and Greek God of medicine.

This site is dedicated to Asclepius, and it became the world's first true hospital.

Hippocrates is known as the "father of modern medicine", and he chose to use more scientific methods to treat patients, rather than those which were based upon mythology.

What is most interesting is that when in operation, they treated everyone the same, regardless of status or ability to pay. It is known that many people that were healed here, subsequently gave up their time to cook & clean as they had no money to offer; even slaves were treated at this hospital.

It is a huge site; and could easily been seen from the coast. Damaged over the centuries by various earthquakes, what remains are mostly the walls built against solid rock.

It is truly impressive in size, and requires a certain level of fitness to climb the steps. There is a path to the side which is wheelchair accessible, but it does not go all the way to the top.

If you visit as part of a group, they should issue you with some special tablet PCs; these have a program that allows you to see what it might have looked like in its heyday. It also provides a 3D view that allows you to move around and "see" the various key features.

If you are anything to do with medical practice, you will find this site utterly fascinating, and...

The moment I set foot on this property, I burst into tears. This was clearly the ancient hospital where people came for healing, also many of them died there. Significant historical site and the best we found on the island of Kos. Going back a second time to sit and meditate under one of the trees
